Mountain Hawks to Begin Eight-Game Road Trip with Three-Game Series at Army

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team (13-17, 1-7 Patriot League) will be heading to Army West Point (16-12, 6-2 Patriot League) for a three-game Patriot League series, starting tomorrow and concluding Sunday at Doubleday Field. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m. with the second game taking place 30 minutes after and Sunday's series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. On Sunday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
  
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 12-9 victory over Delaware State in the consolation game of the Liberty Bell Classic this past Tuesday. Nine different Mountain Hawks contributed to the 17 total hits in the non-league game, led by fifth-year Casey Rother's impressive 5-for-5 performance. He produced two doubles and his 25th career home run, putting him just four away from becoming the all-time record holder, with two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomores Justin Butler, Jake Whitlinger, and junior Tyler Young also recorded multi-hit games, with Butler going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Whitlinger was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and drove in three to go with two stolen bases while Young plated three RBIs and scored a run. Five other Mountain Hawks reached base safely with hits in the game, with Nole hitting a double and first-year Dom Patrizi swiping a bag.
 
Lehigh used six pitchers on Tuesday with first-year right-hander Cole Leaman (W, 1-1) making his first start and recording two strikeouts and two runs on two hits in three innings of work. Sophomore right-hander Marcus Danchision tossed a couple of scoreless innings and did not allow a hit with one strikeout. Junior righty Lucas Rich entered the game and faced five batters and recorded an out, giving up two runs on two hits with a walk and a K before classmate Tyler Thompson was called upon. Thompson hurled 2.1 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with a couple of strikeouts and a pair of walks.The right-handed first-year Tommy Lamar recorded an out and went up against four Hornets and allowed three unearned runs on two this with a walk before senior right-hander Will Grisack (S, 2) was summoned and recorded the final three outs.

Rother is leading four Mountain Hawks that are hitting over .300 this season, with a batting average of .345 with a team-leading 41 hits, 14 doubles, eight home runs, 36 RBIs and 19 walks. Young is hitting at a clip of .333 with 32 hits, 18 runs scored and 17 RBIs while sophomores Andrew Kohl and Rafe Perich both hitting over .300. Kohl has 33 hits, four doubles, two triples and seven home runs for 25 RBIs while Perich is second on the team with 40 hits and nine doubles with two homers.
 
Junior Andrew Nole has played in 21 games and hitting .348 on the year while Butler and first-year Dom Patrizi have both been producing at the plate in the last couple of weeks. Butler has a batting average of .476 with 10 hits, four of them being home runs, in eight games while Patrizi started all five games last week and is hitting .436 on the year with 17 hits and two doubles.
 
There are five Lehigh pitchers that have thrown at least 20 innings this season, led by fifth-year pitcher Luke Rettig who has tossed 28.1 innings for a 4-2 record in seven starts with an ERA of 2.54 and 37 strikeouts. He sits second all-time with 244 career strikeouts, 22 away from moving into first all-time. Sophomore Alex Bouchard has also thrown 24.2 innings, with 24 strikeouts in seven starts and eight appearances while junior Teddy Tolliver has thrown 22 innings with 21 strikeouts in six starts and seven appearances. First-year Shane O'Neill and senior Will Grisack have both tossed 20.2 innings and made over 12 appearances on the mound.
 
Army West Point (16-12, 6-2 Patriot League), the reigning four-time Patriot League Champions, is coming into the weekend off a 13-1 victory over Siena on the road. In league play this year, the Black Knights most recently swept a double-header versus Navy (2-1 and 5-0) and split a twin bill with Bucknell (W, 7-0 and L, 11-7). In their opening series of Patriot League action against Holy Cross, Army dropped the series opener (4-3) but won the next three games 1-0, 10-0 and 13-2.
 
Leading the Black Knights on offense is Kevin Dubrule with a .375 batting average with a team-high 42 hits, 11 doubles and 29 RBIs. Ross Friedrick is hitting .364 with 40 hits, eight doubles and tied for a team-leading six home runs with 26 RBIs. Derek Burg and Sam Ruta are also hitting over .300 this season, with both of them with six homers and 10 doubles.
 
Four pitchers for Army have thrown at least 30 innings so far this year. Tanner Gresham has made seven starts and thrown two complete games in his 40 innings pitched for a 2-1 record and 42 strikeouts with a 3.38 ERA. Matthew Ronnebaum has tossed 38.1 innings with 39 Ks with a 2-2 record in seven starts and a 5.63 ERA. Robbie Bueker has thrown 32.2 innings in three starts and 11 appearances with 24 strikeouts and a completed game with a 3-2 record while Mike Ruggieri has a 4-1 record in four starts and seven appearances with 31 strikeouts.
 
The Black Knights lead the all-time series 98-53 but Army and Lehigh are even at 5-5 over the last 10 games. Last season, the Mountain Hawks dropped the three-game home series at J. David Walker Field and then split the doubleheader from Doubleday Field.

The Mountain Hawks will remain on the road when they take on Coppin State in Baltimore on Wednesday, April 12 in a non-league game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
