Mountain Hawks Swept in Saturday’s Twin Bill at Army West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh baseball team (13-19, 1-9 Patriot League) was shutout 3-0 in game one before giving up a 4-0 lead and falling to Army West Point (18-12, 8-3 Patriot League) 8-4 in game two of the doubleheader from Doubleday Field on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1 – L, 3-0
The only scoring in the seven-inning game took place in the first inning when Ross Friedrick hit a two-RBI single into center field and Braden Golinski grounded out to third base to score the third and final run of the game.
Game one was all pitching for the Black Knights, who only had three hits in the game. Both starters went the distance in the game, with Tanner Gresham (W, 3-1) throwing a complete game with six strikeouts and one walk while fifth-year Luke Rettig (L, 4-3) threw six innings of work and gave up three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks.
Junior Tyler Young, fifth-year Casey Rother and sophomore Justin Butler accounted for the three Lehigh hits on the day with sophomore Jake Whitlinger getting hit by a pitch.
Rettig limited Army to just four hits with Kevin Dubrule contributing half of them and scoring a run. Friedrick's lone hit scored a run and Derek Berg had the other base knock.
Game 2 – L, 8-4
After two scoreless innings, the Mountain Hawks put up three runs in the top of the third, started by a Young RBI single to the shortstop to score Butler for Lehigh's first run of the day. Rother then crushed a two-run homer for his team-leading ninth home run of the year to give the Brown and White a 3-0 lead after three innings.
The score stayed at 3-0 until the seventh frame when fifth-year Joe Gorla doubled to center field to plate Butler and extend Lehigh's advantage to 4-0.
Army's bats woke up in the bottom half of the seventh inning, starting with a Friedrick solo homer to right field to put the Black Knights on the board. After an error scored a run, Justin Lehman singled down the right-field line to bring Army within a run, 4-3. Dubrule stepped up to the plate after an intentional walk to Sam Ruta and blasted a grand slam to put the Black Knights up 7-3.
The Black Knights plated another run in the home half of the eighth frame to push Army's lead to four runs, 8-4, which held as the final score.
Young produced two hits in the second game of the afternoon, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI as Rother connected on his 26th career home run, just three homers away from taking over the all-time home run record. His lone hit drove in two runs as Whitlinger had a hit with a run scored. Gorla plated one run on his double while first-year Dom Patrizi also recorded a hit and Butler scored a run.
Dubrule's grand slam in the seventh game him four RBIs on his two hits while Coleson Titus also had two hits in the game with a run scored. Five other Black Knights recorded base hits.
Sophomore Alex Bouchard got the start in game two, going six innings with one run on five hits and five strikeouts. First-year Shane O'Neill was first out of the bullpen and faced four batters and recorded one out with three runs on two hits and a walk before senior Will Grisack (L, 2-2) entered in relief. Grisack finished the inning giving up three runs on one hit with two Ks and a walk. Senior Ryan Deom closed out the game with one run allowed on one hit and a walk.
Three pitchers threw for the Black Knights in game two with Mike Ruggieri starting on the mound, going five innings with three runs on four hits and seven strikeouts. Sean Dennehy (W,1-0) was the first out of the pen and threw 2.2 innings of work with one run on one hit while striking out four with two walks. Patrick Melampy (S, 3) recorded his third save, going 1.1 innings without allowing a hit or run.
The final game of the three-game series with Army will take place tomorrow, Sunday, April 9 with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. from Doubleday Field. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
