Graduate Assistantships
Graduate Assistant (GA) is a technical term used to describe a specific type of Lehigh University student employee. Duties are generally set by the department but certain conditions must be satisfied before a student can be classified as a GA. These include:
  • Each GA must be a regular full-time Lehigh graduate student. This status normally requires registration for at least 9 credit hours per semester.
  • A GA is a half-time position, and each GA provides services to Lehigh University of up to 20 hours per week.
  • Each GA must be paid a specific stipend which is set for the academic year by the Department.
  • Qualified GAs receive tuition remission for, at most, 18 credit hours in a regular academic year. For GA credits in the Department, the academic year begins with Summer Session 2 and ends with Summer Session 1.
  • Each GA is appointed by a process which begins with a formal letter of appointment issued by the appropriate department staff member. The appointment letter specifies standard University conditions, including stipend level, length of service, and satisfactory academic progress and performance of duties.
  • Tuition remission for a qualified GA is authorized by the Dean as part of the registration process.
  • The availability of an assistantship is based on the needs of the department.
  • The most critical step is to be admitted to a graduate program as that is an obvious prerequisite to being considered for a GA position, and we (Athletics) don't have any influence on the graduate admission process.

Internship Overview
The Lehigh Athletics Department has a long and successful history of providing meaningful internship experiences that are required as part of academic programs in sports management, educational administration, journalism, marketing, and media/public relations. Students from Lehigh, DeSales, East Stroudsburg, Kutztown and Temple (among others) have gained valuable experience, resume value, professional references, as well as academic credit for their work within the Lehigh Athletics Department.

Because Lehigh values the internship experience enough to provide to interns a significant level of responsibility, and because a number of our interns have enjoyed such positive experiences that they subsequently embarked upon careers in coaching or athletics administration, the selection process for interns has been quite competitive. Candidates should expect to prepare a thorough resume and or introductory letter including self-assessed strengths, interests, and ambitions, and a list of current references should be included, as well as the internship coordinator from the home institution. Most internships also will require an interview prior to selection.  Most internships also will require an interview prior to selection.  Students will be expected to maintain active student health insurance coverage and complete all required background checks.
