Mountain Hawks Sweep Sunday Doubleheader at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – Lehigh completed its weekend swing through central New York with a doubleheader sweep of Cornell Sunday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks erased a 5-2 deficit with seven unanswered runs in a 9-5 victory in game one, then built a 7-2 lead in game two before ultimately holding off the Big Red late by a 9-8 score.

Senior Abbey Tabaka and sophomore Kelly Fricker both homered and drove in four runs on the day. Fricker and junior Peyton Sward both registered four hits across the two games.

Lehigh has now won seven consecutive games to move to 12-6 on the season.

Game one saw senior Sydney Parlett and Fricker stake Lehigh to a 2-0 lead with RBI singles in the first and second innings, before Cornell answered with two runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game.

A three-run home run by Sofia Hernandez put Cornell up 5-2 after four innings.

Lehigh pulled two runs back in the fifth inning on a RBI fielder's choice by sophomore Lizzie Kern and then a double steal in which Sward scored.

Tabaka's first home run of the season tied the game in the sixth.

Parlett started a four-run rally in the seventh to give Lehigh the lead for good as she singled home Sward. First-year Kyra Neiswender doubled home Parlett and then Tabaka doubled home two more runs to cap the scoring.

Fricker had three of Lehigh's 12 hits, while Sward, Parlett and Tabaka all had two.

First-year Maddie Masiko started in the circle and allowed five runs on five hits over 3.1 innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Junior Maddy Clark earned the win with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Kern jumpstarted Lehigh in game two with a two-run home run in the first inning, her third of the season.

Cornell answered with single runs in the first and second frames to tie the game at 2-2.

Tabaka put Lehigh back in front in the fourth with an RBI double. First-year Lola Fasano brought Tabaka home with an RBI single. Fricker capped the inning with a three-run home run, giving the Mountain Hawks a 7-2 advantage.

The Big Red pulled four runs back in the sixth to get within 7-6 and Lehigh posted two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a Kern RBI ground out and then another successful double steal with Sward stealing home again.

Cornell put two runs across in the bottom of the seventh and had two on with just one out, but Clark got Emma Harshberger to line out to right field, with senior Crysta Duenas doubling Tarisa Frans off first base to end the game.

Fricker and Sward both had two hits for the Mountain Hawks in game two.

Sophomore Madison Finnerty earned the win in the circle allowing two runs on five hits over four innings. First-year Addison Moorman went 1.2 innings before Clark got the final four outs.

Lehigh will be back in action Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks head to UMBC for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
