Lehigh Splits Wednesday Doubleheader at UMBC

BALTIMORE – A nine-run fourth inning helped lift the Lehigh softball team to a 14-2 victory in five innings Wednesday in the second game of a doubleheader at UMBC. The Retrievers took Wednesday's first game 4-3, snapping Lehigh's winning streak at seven straight.

The Mountain Hawks are now 13-7 at the 20-game mark.

Four of Lehigh's 14 runs in game two came via bases-loaded walk or hit-by-pitch. An RBI double by sophomore Kelly Fricker put Lehigh up 2-1 in the second inning and Fricker capped a three-run third inning with a sacrifice fly to give the Mountain Hawks a 5-2 advantage.

UMBC pulled a run back in the third before the Mountain Hawks exploded for nine runs in the fourth.

Junior Holly Lovett and sophomore Wrigley Fanter delivered RBI singles that put the Mountain Hawks up 8-2. The run was capped by a three-run bases-clearing double by first-year Megan Lodge.

Lehigh only had seven hits in game two, but drew eight walks and was hit by pitches five times. Fricker led Lehigh with two hits, while senior Sydney Parlett scored three runs.

First-year Addison Moorman started in the circle and allowed two runs on four hits over three innings. She struck out two and walked one. Classmate Maddie Masiko followed with two scoreless frames of relief.

An RBI ground out by junior Peyton Sward gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead in the third inning and then UMBC answered with a single run in the third inning three in the fourth to go up 4-1. Kenzie Nicholson's two-run single capped the inning.

Junior Gracie Smith and senior Abbey Tabaka drove in runs with ground outs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Lehigh was unable to pull even.

Sward and sophomore Helen Woloshyn both had two hits to lead Lehigh in Wednesday's opener.
