Mountain Hawks Drop Pair Friday at UNCG Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Lehigh softball team was done in by a pair of big innings in a pair of 8-1 setbacks Friday on day one of the UNCG Tournament. Two Mountain Hawk errors led to eight unearned second-inning runs in game one of the day against Tarleton State. Then, against host UNC Greensboro, a six-run third inning capped eight unearned runs for the Spartans.

The Mountain Hawks totaled eight hits Friday, with sophomore Kelly Fricker posting three and senior Abbey Tabaka adding two. Lehigh is now 13-9 after Friday's action.

Tarleton State's Isabella Bojkovic scored the game's first run on a muffed throw and a second Lehigh error prolonged the second inning, allowing the Texans to plate seven more runs.

Fricker tripled with one out in the third inning and scored Lehigh's lone run on a fielder's choice RBI by senior Sydney Parlett.

Sophomore Madison Finnerty allowed the eight unearned runs over two innings, with four walks and a strikeout, plus six hits allowed. First-year Madison Finnerty threw the final four innings, allowing no runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

Fricker led off the UNCG game with an infield single and scored when junior Gracie Smith reached on an error to put Lehigh up 1-0 in the first.

UNC Greensboro took a 2-1 lead after two innings on two-out RBI hits by Jazmin Mejia and Betsy Eatmon. Macy Michael homered leading off the third, opening the door for a six-run frame. The Spartans added four more RBI hits, including a two-run double by Madelyn McKinnon.

Lehigh was limited to three singles, by Fricker, Tabaka and junior Peyton Sward. Nine different players had a hit and seven different players drove in a run for UNC Greensboro.

Junior Maddy Clark took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings. She struck out three and walked one. First-year Maddie Masiko allowed two runs on three hits over 3.2 innings of work.

The Mountain Hawks continue action at the UNCG Tournament Saturday when they face Tarleton State at 11:30 a.m. before moving on to Elon to face the Phoenix at 4:30 p.m.
