Lehigh Faculty Athletics Representative and Council

The Faculty Athletics Representative serves Lehigh's Athletic Department in several roles.  The FAR often represents Lehigh on the Patriot League Policy Committee.  This committee oversees the unique guidelines for our league, which in most cases are more strict than those of the NCAA.  Recommendations on policies that affect admission, financial aid, recruiting, cost containment, etc. are made by this committee.  For student-athletes participation in intercollegiate sports at Lehigh, the FAR is your resource for academic eligibility and legislative issues.  When you have a question concerning academic requirements, you should feel free to contact our FAR.  The third role of the FAR is the most important for student-athletes.  This is to chair the Faculty Athletics Council.  This council is comprised of professors from each of Lehigh's undergraduate colleges:  Arts and Sciences and Arts Engineering, Business and Economics, Engineering and Applied Sciences, as well as at-large members.  

Faculty Athletics Council

The role of the Faculty-Athletics Council is to provide a friendly and approachable interface between student-athletes, faculty, administration, and coaches. If a student-athlete finds him or herself in academic trouble the first action should be to contact his or her academic advisor.  If that proves unsatisfactory then he or she should contact the faculty-athletics representative.  Such problems include: academic probation, academic discrimination (for example, an instructor gives unreasonable make-up requirements to an athlete who was absent due to team travel), athletic discrimination (for example, a coach makes unreasonable requirements preventing you from achieving your academic goals).
