WORCESTER, Mass. – Lehigh baseball wrapped up its weekend series at Fitton Field against the Holy Cross Crusaders on Sunday afternoon. A massive eight-run top of the fourth inning guided the Mountain Hawks to a 14-2 seven-inning victory to close out the weekend.
Jake Mulvehill earned the win for Lehigh (14-28, 7-16 PL) after tossing a complete 7.0 innings with a career-high ten strikeouts, six hits, two runs, and only one walk. Holy Cross (18-25, 12-11 PL) reliever Henry Harding was credited with the loss after allowing six runs in only 1.0 innings pitched.
Trystan Crawford had a strong start to the game for the Mountain Hawks, as the senior doubled home Robbie Carvelli in his first at bat in the top of the first inning. Crawford then scored Aidan Quinn on an RBI single in the third inning to give his team a 2-0 lead. The Crusaders responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to even the score through three innings.
The scoring in the top of the fourth inning kicked off for Lehigh with two runs crossing home plate courtesy of an error. Two more runs came home on an Ian Wirtz single to extend the lead to four before another two-RBI single from Dom Patrizi gave the Mountain Hawks an 8-2 advantage. A Robby Grasso RBI single and another error allowed two more runs to score for the Lehigh, setting the score at 10-2 after the fourth inning.
While Mulvehill kept the Crusaders off the board, the Mountain Hawks' offense provided even more insurance. Crawford delivered a two-run homer in the fifth before a solo shot from Carvelli and another Wirtz RBI single in the seventh gave Lehigh a 14-2 lead. Mulvehill retired the side 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win for the Mountain Hawks.
Crawford was huge offensively, going 3-3 with four RBIs, two runs scored, a home run, and a double. Carvelli and Wirtz both finished with two hits while Quinn, Patrizi, Grasso, and Owen Walewander also tallied hits in Sunday's win.
The Mountain Hawks will play their final non-league game of the season on the road on Wednesday, April 29 at 4 p.m. against Seton Hall.
