WORCESTER, Mass. – Lehigh baseball traveled north to take on the Holy Cross Crusaders from Fitton Field in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks dropped a 9-0 decision in a seven-inning game one before falling 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning in game two.
Lehigh (13-28, 6-16 PL) was eliminated from postseason contention with the losses while Holy Cross (18-24, 12-10 PL) clinched the fourth and final spot in the Patriot League Championship.
Jaden Wywoda earned the win for the Crusaders in game one after striking out nine batters while allowing three hits in a complete scoreless 7.0 innings. Starting pitcher Sam Fairhurst was credited with the loss in game one after allowing five earned runs to go along with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched.
The Crusaders got things going in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs off a wild pitch and an RBI from Gianni Royer. Royer then singled home another run in the third inning before he crushed a two-RBI home run in the fifth to give Holy Cross a 5-0 lead through five innings. The Crusaders then added four additional runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before Wywoda sealed the deal in the top of the seventh on the mound.
Robbie Carvelli, Aidan Quinn, and Jasper Adelman recorded hits in game one for Lehigh. Noah Gyauch-Quirk and Tommy Lamar also saw action on the mound in game one in addition to Fairhurst.
Reliever Thomas Skrobe earned the win for the Crusaders in game two despite a solid performance from starter Jake Lenahan, who went 7.0 innings with six strikeouts and no runs allowed. The loss was credited to Lehigh starter Cole Leaman despite a stat line of six strikeouts and three earned runs in 8.0 innings.
Lenahan and Leaman worked efficiently to begin the game, as neither allowed any runs nor faced more than four batters in an innings through the opening three frames. The Crusaders finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer from Nick Anderson to give Holy Cross a 2-0 advantage.
Lenahan kept the Mountain Hawks off the board for his entire seven-inning appearance. Brock Graf checked into the game in relief of Lenahan in the top of the eighth and immediately allowed his first two batters to get on base. A sac-fly from Carvelli allowed Lehigh's first run of the day to cross home plate, setting the score at 2-1 through eight innings.
After Leaman held the Crusaders scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, a lead-off homer from Trystan Crawford in the top of the ninth tied the game 2-2. With the score tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, Van Coughlin successfully bunted home Macade Maxwell to walk it off for Holy Cross.
Robby Grasso went 2-3 in game two while Carvelli, Quinn, Crawford, Ian Wirtz, Dom Patrizi, and Silvio Giardina also recorded hits for Lehigh. Ralph Gariano appeared in relief of Leaman in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Mountain Hawks will conclude the weekend series against Holy Cross on Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m. from Fitton Field.
