Strong start, tough finish for Lehigh in Patriot League opening defeat vs. Boston U.

3/16/2019 3:54:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – An Autumn Ryan goal gave the Lehigh women's lacrosse team a 6-4 lead with 5:36 remaining in the first half, but Boston University turned the tides with three goals in the final 3:41 of the half, extending its run to 8-0 in the second, on the way to downing the Mountain Hawks 16-8 on Saturday. Ryan tied a career-high four points on the afternoon. The junior tallied three goals and an assist for her fourth-career hat trick, but the Terriers proved too much for the Mountain Hawks to overcome in the Patriot League opener for both sides.

"The end of our first half was really disappointing," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "They went on a nice run and had some transition goals that really hurt us. We didn't come out of halftime with enough intensity and ball movement that we would have needed to contend today."

Dickey also had a hat trick, her fifth of the season and 20th of her career, while eclipsing 100 career goals in the process. All three of Dickey's goals came in the game's first 20:57. Senior Kellie Gough had a goal and assist while senior Kaitlyn Quinn scored as well. Senior Mary Ellen Carron and junior Alexandra Ladda had two caused turnovers apiece to help lead the defense.

The Mountain Hawks converted two free-position goals in the game's first 3:09 and three in the first 8:05 to take leads of 2-0 and 3-2. The teams traded goals, until a two-goal Lehigh surge – with scores from Dickey at the 9:03 mark and Ryan at 5:36 – gave the Mountain Hawks a 6-4 edge.

From there, Boston University scored at 3:41, 1:50 and 1:00 of the first half to take a 7-6 lead into intermission.

The Terriers continued the run into the second. They capped off the rally by scoring three times in a 39-second span, before adding a fourth in the span of 2:16, to give them a 12-6 lead with 18:29 on the clock.

Lehigh scored twice more the rest of the way, including the first of the season from Quinn, but Boston University answered with four of its own to pull away down the stretch.

Final shots were 36-21 in favor of the Terriers, while Boston University held an 18-10 edge in draw controls. Groundballs were even at 16. Sophomore Samantha Sagi made 11 saves in goal before being replaced by freshman Kerry McHugh, who had two over the game's final 11:06.

Lehigh will return to action next Saturday when it travels to No. 10 Loyola to face the Greyhounds. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
