BALTIMORE – The Lehigh women's lacrosse team fell behind 6-1 midway through the first half, but wouldn't go away quietly, eventually falling at No. 11 Loyola, 13-6 on Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks outscored the Greyhounds 5-4 over the middle 32:16 of the game to pull within 10-6 with more than 15 minutes still remaining, but Loyola scored the game's final three goals to put it away. Junior Autumn Ryan scored three goals to lead Lehigh's offense, good for her second straight hat trick.
"Our team battled hard today against a very talented team," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Their draw unit is dominant and it was the difference in the game."
All three of Ryan's goals came in the first half. Junior Sondra Dickey added two goals, two groundballs and a draw control while senior Kellie Gough scored Lehigh's other goal, while also dishing an assist. Sophomore Hannah Cermack recorded two assists in the defeat to increase her team-leading total to 16.
The Greyhounds scored six of the game's first seven goals, with Dickey netting Lehigh's only score in the early going. The Mountain Hawks' offense came alive down the stretch of the half, with Ryan scoring all three of them – at 7:17, 5:17 and 2:52 – to help Lehigh pull within 9-4 following 30 minutes of play.
After Loyola went up 10-4, the Mountain Hawks answered with two straight – from Gough and Dickey at 18:46 and 15:07, respectively. But from here, the Greyhounds got goals at 14:39, 13:30 and 6:08 for the 13-6 final.
Final shots were 37-15 in favor of Loyola while the Greyhounds held an 18-14 edge in groundballs and 17-4 advantage in draw controls. Sophomore Samantha Sagi was strong in goal, making 13 saves across a pair of Greyhounds' goalkeepers who combined for five.
Lehigh will return home to face No. 14 Navy at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Wednesday, Mar. 27 at 5 p.m.
