ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Lehigh faced off against #4 Navy for their first Patriot League game away from home. The Mountain Hawks dropped this one against the Midshipmen, losing 11-6.
We played a very talented number four team in Navy tonight and I am so proud of our fight anf effort" said head coach Steph Lazo. " From our supporters, to our game changers, and starters, everyone had an impact on the game. We proved that when we believe in ourselves and each other, we can do anything when we do it together."
Navy wasted no time, as Maggie DeFabio scored just 13 seconds into the contest. Nina DeNicola answered quickly with Lehigh's first goal at 12:21, her 25th of the season. The two teams traded goals throughout the next five minutes, concluding the first quarter knotted up at three. DeNicola assisted the Mountain Hawks second goal from Gracie Shoup, and Shoup assisted the third goal from Ava Schulties.
The Midshipmen scored the first of the period once again in the second on a goal from Alyssa Chung. They didn't let off the gas, scoring three more until Chloe DelNegro stopped the momentum with a score. Lehigh trailed 7-4 at the halfway mark.
Navy scored two within the first 6:28 of the second half. Lehigh's first goal of the quarter came with 3:07 remaining off of the stick of DeNicola. Molly Snow netted her team-leading 27th of the season within the final two minutes of the third, cutting Navy's lead to three. Taylor Miles and Anna Gotterup scored the only goals in the final quarter, giving Navy the 11-6 win.
DeNicola's two goals were the most for any Mountain Hawk. She was also one of four Lehigh players who tallied an assist, joined by Shoup, Karina Van der Walt, and Kacie Wines.
Wines and Camilla Madonna were Lehigh's leaders in ground balls with three, a season high for both of them. Morgan Lesiewicz had three draw controls, the most for her team.
Micaela Jennings played the entire game in net, recording 16 saves, tying her career high that she set last week.
Chung was Navy's leading goalscorer, earning a hat trick. Miles scored two, the only other Midshipman with more than one. Maura Murphy dominated the center circle, controlling 11 draws.
Lehigh (5-6, 0-4 PL) eyes its first Patriot League win against Bucknell, as the Mountain Hawks host the Bison Saturday at noon. The Mountain Hawks will honor their senior class prior to the opening draw.
