Army Pulls Away to Defeat Lehigh After Three Quarters of Exchanging Scores

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Lehigh traveled to Army Saturday for the final road game of the regular season. After three quarters of trading scores, the Black Knights pulled away with six unanswered goals in the fourth to win 17-10.
Lehigh got on the board first at 11:54 thanks to a goal from Grace Martel. Army countered 35 seconds later to equal the game once again. Both teams went back and forth between the nine and eight minute marks with Karina Van der Walt notching a goal in between two Black Knight scores. Martel scored her second at 4:34 to tie the game, but Lily Valentini later scored with a woman up to give Army the lead after one.
Molly Snow opened up the scoring in quarter two with a diving goal at 9:57 to tie the game at four.
Van der Walt and Gracie Shoup found the back of the net in succession to put Lehigh up two with six minutes to go in the half. Army's Paige Moretti and Valentini each scored their second of the game to tie the game with three minutes to go. Geneva Milch Cesoni scored within the final minute to give Army the 7-6 lead through one half.
After five minutes of scoreless action to start the half, Ryan Remaly sent a shot between the posts to give Army a two goal lead. Shoup scored her second to bring Lehigh's deficit within one, but Valentini scored for the third time a minute and a half later to keep the Mountain Hawks outside of arms reach. Lehigh scored at 3:18 off of the steal and score from Chloe DelNegro, however Valentini played spoiler yet again to limit the Mountain Hawk momentum. After trading goals once again, Snow sniped her second of the game with nine seconds remaining to go into the final period down 11-10.
Milch Cesoni countered Lehigh's last second third quarter goal with a score of her own less than a minute into the fourth, and then again five minutes later. The Black Knights did not look back, scoring four more times to win the game 17-10.
The Mountain Hawks had four players earn a team-high two goals. Martel's assist on top of her two goals gave her the distinction of Lehigh's point leader. She joined Kacie Wines, who had three assists in the contest.
Martel was also Lehigh's leader in ground balls with three. Camilla Madonna had three as well. Brynn Freeman paced the Mountain Hawks with two caused turnovers, and Snow led the team with three draw controls.
Micaela Jennings was in net the entire game, stopping ten shots.
Valentini finished the game with five goals and six total points for Army. Milch Cesoni totaled four goals, and Brigid Duffy earned a hat trick with three. Sarah Chernik dominated the face-off circle, picking up a career-high 16 draw controls.
Lehigh (6-9, 1-7 PL) heads back home to face off against Lafayette in its final regular season game. The Mountain Hawks will fight for their second straight win in The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, part of Jefferson Health on Wednesday, April 22 at 6 p.m.
