Van der Walt scores Four In High-Scoring Loss to Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Lehigh traveled to upstate New York to face-off against Colgate in the first of three straight road games. The Mountain Hawks fell to the Raiders, 20-16.
The Mountain Hawks and Raiders went back and forth for the first 11 minutes of the game. Scores from Kacie Wines and Chloe DelNegro matched two goals from Colgate's Ella Bishara. The Raiders went on a three goal run to end the period, exiting the quarter up 5-2.
Colgate rode the first quarter momentum into the second, scoring three goals in a two minute span. Karina Van der Walt scored her second and third goals of the season within a minute, and Nina DeNicola netted her first of the game, cutting Colgate's lead to two midway through the period. The Raiders responded with four straight goals in the final six minutes of the half. Gracie Shoup found the back of the net with nine seconds remaining to cap off a 12 goal period, resulting in a 12-7 Colgate lead at halftime.
Aubrey McMahon scored the first in the period for the Raiders, extending their lead to six. Van der Walt scored for a third time at 12:29, earning the first hat trick of her career. Ella Bishara scored for Colgate to get a hat trick of her own, but Molly Snow and Grace Martel scored their first goals of the game, bringing Lehigh's deficit within four. Bishara scored again, but Wines put a shot between the pipes for a third time to keep it a four goal game. Each team scored twice more in the final three minutes, which gave the Raiders a 17-13 lead with one period remaining.
Colgate scored two to start the final quarter, but Martel scored two of her own and Van der Walt notched her fourth to bring Lehigh's deficit to three. The Raiders scored once more, securing the 20-16 win.
Karina Van der Walt tripled her career goal total with a career high four goals in the contest. Wines and Martel each tallied a hat trick of their own, scoring three. Snow and DeNicola had two goals each as well.
Wines, Snow, and Shoup were the only Mountain Hawks to earn assists. Snow assisted four goals while Wines and Shoup each had three.
Grace Martel led the team in both ground balls and draw controls, picking up a game-high three ground balls and controlling five draws. DeNicola caused the most turnovers for Lehigh with two.
McMahon was Colgate's leading scorer, notching six goals on ten shots. Ella Bishara scored five of her own, and had a team-high two assists.
Lehigh's (5-8, 0-6 PL) travels to Boston University next Saturday to face the Terriers at 11 a.m.
