BOSTON - Lehigh women's lacrosse continued their road swing with a matchup against Boston University. The Mountain Hawks scored in the waning seconds of the second overtime to beat the Terriers 11-10.
Nina DeNicola scored the game winner with five seconds remaining to push Lehigh to its first league win.
The Terriers scored early, with Izabella Amonte finding the back of the net just over a minute into the game. Lehigh netted three straight from Karina Van der Walt, Chloe DelNegro, and Grace Martel as a response. Tessa Geddes scored for Boston University in the final 32 seconds to cut Lehigh's lead to one after one.
The Mountain Hawks fed their hot hands early in the second. They scored two goals within a minute of each other, again from Van der Walt and DelNegro. Jayne Feeney got the Terriers on the board again in the second with 4:26 to go in the half. Lehigh had a 5-3 lead going into the half.
Amonte scored right out of the half to bring Lehigh's lead to one. Van der Walt scored her third on a player-up free position goal at 9:13, but Geddes responded two minutes later with a score and then Alyssa Mozi after that at 3:18 to tie up the game at six. Van der Walt scored yet again with 1:30 remaining to regain the lead.
Martel sent one between the posts to open up scoring in the fourth, but Boston University scored twice to tie the game up once again. Molly Snow netted a free position goal with 4:27 remaining to put Lehigh back on top, and Van der Walt scored her fifth to put Lehigh up two. The Terriers kept fighting, scoring two in a 25-second span to tie the game at 10 with two minutes remaining to send the game into overtime.
Both teams went scoreless for the entirety of the first overtime period and practically all of the second overtime, but with five seconds remaining Nina DeNicola scored the game winner to give the Mountain Hawks their first league win. Micaela Jennings had two crucial saves and a caused turnover in the second overtime period to cap off a spectacular post-regulation performance.
Van der Walt's five goals was a career high for the senior and the second game in a row where she scored at least four. DelNegro and Martel each scored two.
Wines led the game with four assists, with her first marking 100 total points in her career.
Martel picked up a team and season high five ground balls in the contest. Brynn Freeman had four and led Lehigh with five draw controls. Paige Hummel and Camilla Madonna each had a game-high three caused turnovers for the Mountain Hawks.
Jennings manned the net for the entire game, saving nine shots and allowing 10 goals in just under 70 minutes.
"I am so incredibly proud of the fight and resiliency our team showed today," exclaimed Coach Steph Lazo. "We had a lot of key players that played into this victory, but it was the energy and belief that we had in each other that won us the game. Today was a tenacious effort and we came out on top together!"
Amonte was Boston University's leading scorer with four goals, and Geddes and Abby Cotraro had the second-most with two each.
The Mountain Hawks travel to West Point for their final away game of the season against Army. The penultimate game of the season will take place Saturday, April 18, with the start time listed at noon.
