BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of four of its last five games, the Lehigh women's lacrosse team returns home on Saturday to host Boston University at 1 p.m. The Mountain Hawks are coming off an impressive 14-5 win over UC Davis on Tuesday to wrap up their spring-break trip to California. Lehigh used a 6-1 run in the middle of the game to turn a 5-2 lead into a commanding 11-3 advantage, on the way to victory.
The UC Davis game was a neutral site contest at San Diego State, two days after Lehigh dropped a 13-6 final against the Aztecs. The Mountain Hawks actually led 6-5 early in the second half of that game, but San Diego State scored the game's final eight goals.
Lehigh got back to its winning ways Tuesday, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage and only building the lead from there. Junior Sondra Dickey scored four goals to lead the offense while sophomore Hannah Cermack dished a career-high four assists. Dickey is up to a team-high 23 goals while Cermack owns a team-leading 14 assists. Seniors Kellie Gough and Mary Ellen Carron, and sophomore Julianne Puckette each scored two goals. Sophomore Samantha Sagi continued her strong play between the pipes, stopping 10-of-15 shots sent her way. She had double-figure saves in both California games to up her season total to four (in seven contests). For the year, she owns a 10.42 goals against average and 50.7 save percentage.
The Mountain Hawks will be eying their fourth straight league-opening victory. Last year, Lehigh opened Patriot League play with a dominant 15-8 win at Boston University, handing the Terriers their largest-ever Patriot League (regular season) defeat. This year, the Terriers are 4-3, with the wins coming over UMass Lowell (17-12), Hartford (20-2), Fairfield (16-5) and Temple (12-9). Leading the offense is Kailey Conry with 37 points behind 11 goals and 26 assists. Her 3.71 assists per contest are good for second nationally. Kaitlin Belval owns a team-leading 14 goals (along with three assists) while Kelly Matthews has 14 points (10 goals, four assists). In total, six different Terriers have recorded 10 or more points. Tonianne Magnelli leads the way in draw controls (33) and caused turnovers (10) while Lexi Lewis' 16 groundballs are tops on the team. A pair of goalkeepers have seen significant action, with Kennady Smith seeing the most time. She has tallied an 11.96 GAA and 44.2 save percentage in 291:05 of action. Meanwhile, Bianca Smith has a 6.57 GAA and 48.3 save percentage in 136:56.
Lehigh has won three straight against Boston University to pull even at four in the all-time series. Last year's seven-goal victory followed two consecutive one-goal thrillers in 2016 and 2017. The last times the teams played in Bethlehem (2017), the Mountain Hawks used a late 6-0 run to take a 13-10 lead, on the way to the 13-12 victory. The first meeting between the two teams was in 1999 - a 17-9 BU win. The teams have played at least once a year after BU entered the Patriot League in 2014.
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks return to action the following Saturday (Mar. 23) at Loyola. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
