BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After being shutout in the doubles matches, Lehigh clawed its way back and relied on Bryant Born's three-set victory at the fifth flight to clinch the 4-3 victory over Villanova on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks, winners of two-straight, improve to 2-1 on the season and avenge a 6-1 loss to Villanova last season. The Wildcats fall to 3-2 on the season.
Making his singles debut, freshman Jacob Edelchik started the comeback run as he grabbed the first singles victory of the dual with a straight-set victory at the fourth flight. After falling behind 2-1 in the team race, Jack Martin-Dyer put Lehigh back in the lead as he also won in straight sets at the first flight with his first win of the season.
The Wildcats fought their way back into the lead following a win at the third flight, but Christopher Auteri knotted up the team score, 3-3, following his three-set triumph at the sixth flight. After falling 7-6(3) in the second, Born put the team on his back and marched on to a 6-2 victory in the third set to clinch the comeback win for the Mountain Hawks.
Auteri is now 3-0 on the season and leads the team in wins, while Born is 2-1 after winning his last two matches.
Lehigh will be back in action next Saturday with a home dual against Stevens Tech at 10 a.m.
