BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After defeating No. 5 Bucknell in the semifinals on Saturday, No. 1 Lehigh men's tennis hosted No. 2 Navy in the Patriot League Championship match on Sunday afternoon from the Ulrich Varsity Tennis Courts. The Mountain Hawks battled but ultimately fell by a score of 4-2.
Lehigh (15-9, 6-1 PL) finished its season having claimed the top seed in the Patriot League for the first time in program history. The Mountain Hawks also made their first title match appearance since 2013 and third overall in team history. Navy (27-17, 6-1) avenged its 4-3 regular season loss to Lehigh in the victory.
Senior Wyeth Anzilloti and first-year Henry Stoller got things started for the Mountain Hawks on doubles court two, defeating Aniketh Ayinala and Tommy Kim 6-2. Junior Alex Van Lumich and fifth-year Sean Jaeger rallied past Herrick Legaspi and Charlie Spencer 7-5 on doubles court one to secure the first point of the match for the Mountain Hawks. First-year Kosei Ogata and sophomore Rafael Gracie's match on court three was left unfinished.
The Mountain Hawks struck first in singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win from Van Lumich on court two to take a 2-0 lead. The Mids got on the board thanks to a two-set win on court one before a two-set win on court two evened the team score 2-2.
The next match to finish was on court five, where sophomore Ofer Hacohen was bested by Jeffery Etterbeek in two sets to put Navy within one win of the clinch. On court three, first-year Aleksandar Daskalovic forced a third set after dropping the first 6-0. Trailing 5-0 in set three, Daskalovic rallied and won three games in a row. However, Spencer gutted out the match-clinching game to win 6-3 in the third set and secure his team the Patriot League title.
