BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Playing indoors due to inclement weather, No. 1 Lehigh men's tennis played host to the No. 5 Bucknell Bison in the Patriot League Championship semifinals on Saturday morning. The Mountain Hawks defeated the Bison 4-2, punching their ticket to the championship match for the first time since 2013.
"This is a testament to all of the work our guys have put in, not just this year, but since the first year I got here," said Howard Talmud '77 head coach Craig Schwartz. "The guys are committed to our culture and what we know we can achieve. They have belief and ultimately were able to believe at the end today to get that fourth point against a tough Bucknell team."
Lehigh (14-8, 6-1 PL) advances to its third-ever Patriot League Championship match, with the Mountain Hawks holding a 1-1 record in the final. Lehigh's 14 dual meet wins are the most the team has had since 2016.
The Mountain Hawks kicked off the morning in doubles competition, winning the first two courts to secure the point. Senior Wyeth Anzilotti and first-year Henry Stoller finished first with a 6-3 win on court two before fifth-year Sean Jaeger and junior Alex Van Lumich picked up a 6-4 win on court one.
Lehigh also struck first in singles play thanks to a dominant performance from first-year Aleksandar Daskalovic, as he won 6-0, 6-2 on court three. The Bison responded on court one as reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Amar Tahirovic earned a two-set victory over Jaeger. Lehigh and Bucknell then traded singles wins on courts two and four to set the score at 3-2 Lehigh headed to singles matches five and six.
Sophomore Ofer Hacohen began the final slate of matches with a 6-4 win in set one on court five. Meanwhile, Stoller dropped his first set to Bucknell's William Robinson 6-2 on court six. Another 6-4 decision in the second set from Hacohen clinched Lehigh's championship match berth.
Stoller's singles match on court six was left unfinished.
The Mountain Hawks will face the winner of No. 2 Navy and No. 3 Army in the Patriot League Championship match on Sunday, April 26 at the Lewis Indoor Tennis Center/Ulrich Varsity Tennis Courts. Start time of the match is TBD.
"I told the guys to enjoy this match for the next ten minutes, and then we've got to move our focus to tomorrow," said Schwartz. "It's going to be a tough match against either Army or Navy. I think the biggest thing is to take care of our bodies and make sure we're at peak performance tomorrow."
