Men's Tennis Opens Season with Weekend Home Stand

2/1/2018 3:27:00 PM | Men's Tennis

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team will open its 2018 season with a pair of home matches this weekend inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks will face Drexel at 11 a.m. Saturday and close out the weekend with a 10 a.m. tilt Sunday against Saint Francis.

Lehigh compiled an overall record of 7-14 last season, with a mark of 5-2 against Patriot League opponents under Howard Talmund '77 Heach Coach Wouter Hendrix, now entering his sixth season at the helm of the program. The Mountain Hawks garnered the third seed in the Patriot League Tournament and fell to sixth-seeded Bucknell, 4-3, in a spirited quarterfinal round match.

LU returns seven players from last year's squad, including a core of four regular starters from last year's lineup. Headlining the group of returners are All-Patriot League performers Jack Petersen and George Cooper. Petersen, a senior co-captain, has spent the last two seasons at the No. 2 singles flight, while also spending most of his time at the third doubles position. Cooper took over the No. 1 singles and doubles positions last season as a sophomore and earned himself an Academic All-Patriot League selection with a stellar 3.94 GPA during the spring semester.

Junior Christopher Auteri and sophomore Jack Martin-Dyer are also looking to return to their starting roles from a season ago. Auteri saw action in six Patriot League matches while playing at the No. 4 singles flight. Martin-Dyer is looking to build off a strong rookie campaign as he cracked the postseason lineup at the No. 3 singles and doubles positions and finished second on the team with five doubles wins in league play.

Rounding out the group of returners are senior co-captain Dylan Karchere-Sun and juniors Sam Bencheghib and Bryant Born. Karchere-Sun saw action in 10 non-league matches last season in the middle of the lineup, while Bencheghib saw limited action at the bottom of the order and Born will look to rebound after having his season cut short due to injury.

Coach Hendrix welcomes a pair of talented freshmen to the squad this season who will look to make an immediate impact. During the fall season, Harry Wang reached the finals at the Saint Joseph's Invitational and captured a doubles title at the Patriot League Kickoff, while Jacob Edelchik captured a doubles title at the Farnsworth Invitational.

Lehigh's two matches this weekend at the Lewis Tennis Center kicks off a stretch of seven-straight home matches for the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh will once again head west to California for spring break where they will face strong competition against the likes of WashU-St. Louis, Azusa Pacific and UC Irvine.

Following their California swing, LU returns home and opens up Patriot League play against Loyola on March 18, which begins a four-match home stand to finish out the month.

The last chance to see the Mountain Hawks at home will be April 11 when they host league foe Bucknell. Lehigh will close out Patriot League play Apr. 21 with a trip to Easton for the annual showdown with archrival Lafayette.

The season will conclude with the Patriot League Championships on Apr. 26-29 on the campus of Colgate University.
