BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh begins a two-game home stand against Ivy League opponents as the Mountain Hawks welcome Yale to Goodman Stadium on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks are looking for their first win of 2017 after starting 0-2 with losses to Villanova and Monmouth for the second consecutive season. Last week, Lehigh gave up 555 yards of total offense, including 351 on the ground as Monmouth scored 26 unanswered points to rally for a 46-27 win. Junior Brad Mayes threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns, while senior Troy Pelletier became Lehigh's career receptions leader in a losing effort. .
Â
With five receptions at Monmouth, Pelletier became Lehigh's career leader in receptions, eclipsing the mark of 237 held by Rennie Benn '86. Pelletier also has a shot at Benn's career receiving yards record this season as he enters the Yale game 536 yards short.
Â
Lehigh's 2016 campaign was highlighted by a high-powered offense that ranked sixth in the FCS in both passing yards and total yards, and ninth nationally in scoring. The Mountain Hawks established school single-season records with 466 points scored and 5,806 yards of total offense. Lehigh scored 40 or more points in seven of its nine wins, led by a 63-point effort at Yale and a 58 point showing against Fordham. Despite an 0-2 start, Lehigh's offense has been productive, averaging 31 points and 463 yards per game thus far in 2017.
Â
Mayes will start against Yale for the second time in his career. His first start against the Bulldogs was memorable as he threw for a school and Yale Bowl-record 524 yards and added six touchdown passes in Lehigh's 63-35 win last season. Mayes is off to a good start in 2017, with 740 passing yards, seven touchdowns and just one interception through two games.
Â
When he suits up against Yale, senior Quentin Jones will face the team in which he suffered the injury that ended his 2016 campaign. Jones had 20 tackles through five games before suffering a season-ending head injury in the fourth quarter at Yale. He sat out the remainder of the fall semester while recovering, returned to campus in the spring and has started Lehigh's first two games at rover. Jones has six tackles through two games and has averaged nearly 10 yards on five punt returns.
Â
Lehigh has started 0-2 for the fourth time in Andy Coen's 12 years as head coach. The Mountain Hawks are hoping to replicate last year's success where a win in game three propelled Lehigh to a nine-game winning streak. The two previous teams to start 0-2 ended up dropping their first four (2009) and five (2014) games, respectively.
Â
Yale enters its season opener looking to rebound from a 3-7 campaign. The Bulldogs did end their 2016 season on a high note, upsetting rival Harvard 21-14. Yale returns 41 lettermen and seven players who have previously earned All-Ivy accolades.
Â
Sophomore Kurt Rawlings started the final three games last season and is expected to get the nod at quarterback. Running back Deshawn Salter ran for 233 yards and two touchdowns against Lehigh in 2015. At wide receiver, Ross Drwal's brother Jake '12 was a former All-Patriot League receiver for the Brown and White. Defensively, Spencer Rymiszewski returns as team captain after missing all of last season due to injury. Linemen Copache Tyler and Kyle Mullen, linebacker Matthew Oplinger and defensive back Jason Alessi are all previous All-Ivy honorees.
Â
In recognition of competition between Lehigh (founded 1865) and Yale (founded 1701), the lifetime achievements of their graduates, and the generations of families that have attended both universities, the Yank Townsend Trophy is presented to the winner of the Lehigh - Yale football game. Charles Frederick Townsend was the only student from Connecticut to enter the Lehigh Class of 1895, earning the nickname "Yank" He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in architecture and engineering, operated his own firm, Norton & Townsend from 1911-1960, and designed a number of bank buildings and colonial residences. Yank Townsend (1873-1963) was a devotee of Lehigh and Yale athletics, and today a trophy bearing his name is presented to the winner for the seventh time. Yale initially won the trophy in 2006 and successfully retained it twice, before Lehigh captured the trophy for the first time in 2011 and reclaimed it in 2016.
Â
Lehigh and Yale have met 24 previous times with the Bulldogs leading the series 17-7. This series has been highlighted by streaks, as Yale won the first 12 meetings and then the Mountain Hawks won the next five. Yale had won five of the last six games prior to Lehigh's win last season. Andy Coen is just 2-5 versus the Bulldogs.
Â
On Saturday, Lehigh will compete in the Game Day Recycling Challenge, a nationwide competition between universities to reduce waste at football games. The challenge is to educate fans about waste reduction, and weigh all trash and recycling from one game. Lehigh will implement its waste production program and will track and report waste reduction and disposal data.
