PHILADELPHIA - The Lehigh rowing team enjoyed a strong showing in the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on Friday, led by the Women's Varsity Eight which advanced to the semifinals of the largest intercollegiate rowing event in the United States. After finishing third in its morning race, the crew finished won its afternoon heat to advance to the semifinals set for Saturday on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
"The team rose to having a competitive day," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "Having one boat make the semifinals doesn't show the level the team rose to today. We had so many near misses, which will provide fuel for the future to train harder and get faster."
The Women's Varsity Eight finished in 7:12.175 in the morning, which was good for third place, before coming in 7:14.401 in the afternoon. The Mountain Hawks finished ahead of North Carolina in second and Delaware in third. Amherst, Pittsburgh and Fairfield rounded out the heat.
Also racing on Friday was the Women's Varsity Four which placed third (8:12.991). The Men's Pair came in fourth (7:42.990), Men's Varsity Eight finished fifth (6:23.150) and the Women's JV 8+ came in fifth (7:46.036).
The Women's Varsity Eight will row at 10:36 a.m. on Saturday. Should the Mountain Hawks advance, the finals are set for 4:28 p.m. All championship races will air live online on 6ABC in Philadelphia and online through ESPN3.
