Lehigh Wins Three Petite Finals At Patriot League Championship
5/16/2025 5:16:00 PM | Women's Rowing
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – The spring season came to an end for Lehigh women's rowing at the 2025 Patriot League Women's Rowing Championship on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. on Friday. The Mountain Hawks won the petite final in the second varsity eight+, first varsity four+ and second varsity four+ while taking third in the first varsity eight+ petite final. The team placed eighth overall out of nine competing schools.
"A nice response from the team in the afternoon finals," said Steven J. '69 & Karen A. Lee Head Rowing Coach Peter Costas. "We were disappointed to not achieve our goal of cracking grand final qualification, and I think we reset and found a persistent and aggressive base in the petite finals."
The first race of the day for the Mountain Hawks was the second varsity four+ heat, which was added as a new race this season. Lehigh placed fourth with a time of 8:43.326, advancing them to the petite final. The Mountain Hawks also placed fourth in the first varsity four+ heat with a finish in 8:06.742, sending them to the petite final.
Lehigh took fourth in the second varsity eight+ heat, finishing in 7:14.617 to qualify for the petite final. The Mountain Hawks finished fourth in the first varsity eight+ as well in 7:06.959 to place themselves in the petite final.
The first petite final of the day for the Mountain Hawks was in the second varsity four+. Lehigh edged out Colgate with times of 9:02.093 to 9:05.958 to claim gold. The Mountain Hawks dominated the first varsity four+ petite final, defeating second-place Colgate by nearly 20 seconds at 8:42.637.
"1v4+ ran their own piece start to finish, characteristic of the seniors in that lineup to see them continue to press after the race was within their control," said Costas. "2v4+ brought a great representation of the program in the inaugural running of the event at the Patriot League Championship. They ran a tightly-contested final the whole way down and found another gear to respond to strong challenges throughout the race."
The Mountain Hawks claimed victory in the second varsity eight+ petite final, clocking in at 7:31.397. The final race of the day for Lehigh saw the Mountain Hawks finish third in the first varsity eight+ petite final with a time of 7:29.496.
Â
"1v8 wasn't able to replicate their cohesive start from the morning, but did the work to find their base and rhythm and race sticky, particularly in the 1000 meters," said Costas. "Gritty piece from our 2v8, they overcame an early deficit with a lot of poise and had a great response in the back 1000."
The women's rowing team now sets its sights on the offseason.
