Second-Place Finish In Men's First Varsity Four+ Final Highlights Weekend At Knecht Cup

COOPER RIVER, N.J. – Lehigh rowing raced in its first regatta of the 2025 spring season, heading to the Cooper River in New Jersey for the Knecht Cup. Both the men's and women's teams competed against 40 different schools over the weekend, highlighted by a second-place finish in the men's first varsity four+ race for Lehigh on Sunday.
"I'm proud of how this team is digging in and continuing to chase speed relentlessly throughout spring racing," said sophomore Hannah Vogel. "I think we gained a lot of confidence this weekend taking moves against tough opponents. I couldn't ask for a better weekend out there doing my favorite thing with my favorite people."
Lehigh's first event of the weekend was the women's first varsity four+ heat on Saturday morning, which saw the Mountain Hawks take third with a time of 9:05.74. The men's first varsity four+ followed, finishing in second at 8:01.70 in their heat. The women's second varsity four+ took third at 9:17.28 in their initial heat race.
The women's first varsity eight+ finished in fifth in their opening heat with a time of 7:35.87 on Saturday. The men's first varsity eight+ placed third at 6:27.89 in their opening heat race. The women's second varsity eight+ finished in fourth at 7:47.09 while the men's second varsity eight+ also finished in fourth at 6:40.25.
The final two races of the day on Saturday for Lehigh were the women's first varsity four+ semifinal and the women's first varsity eight+ semifinal. The Mountain Hawks' four finished in sixth at 8:51.64 while the eight also finished sixth at 7:40.62.
The women's second varsity four+ competed in the petite final to kick off Lehigh's Sunday, with the boat finishing second at 8:40.80. Lehigh also claimed second place in the first varsity four+ petite final with a time of 8:24.40.
In the men's second varsity four+ final, Lehigh took third with a finish in 7:36.15. Lehigh's biggest win of the weekend came in the men's first varsity four+ final when the Mountain Hawks took second place with a time of 7:02.62.
The Lehigh men's second varsity eight+ finished fifth at 6:22.88 in their final. The women's first varsity eight competed in the petite final, taking fifth at 7:09.33. The final race of the weekend for the Mountain Hawks was the men's first varsity eight final, where Lehigh finished in sixth at 6:11.55.
"Our race was a huge display of patience and perseverance, two things we have been working diligently on," said sophomore Olivia Shafer. "We went out there and ripped it, even though we experienced a few mishaps we were able to end the race powerful. Although we didn't make it to semis, we are still so proud of our endurance and our ability to compete."
The Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend on April 19 at the Kerr Cup in Philadelphia.
