Lehigh Hosts Annual Class Day Regatta

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Lehigh rowing hosted its annual Class Day Races on Saturday at the Steiner/Steinberg Boathouse in Allentown. The Mountain Hawks welcomed back numerous alumni and parents for a full day of rowing and a boat-naming ceremony.

"It was a really positive event. A foundation of the day is the care, energy and enthusiasm that the Lehigh rowers have for each other," said Steven J. '69 & Karen A. Lee head coach Peter Costas. "I really enjoyed seeing them being creative and bringing a lot of joy competing against each other. The day is about celebrating the new walk-ons that have joined the team and the alumni that are back for the day. It warms my heart to see everyone competing together on Class Day."

Several boats raced against one another on Saturday morning, with the teams each wearing matching costumes such as reindeer, cows and Mr. Clean. Each team was comprised of both current student-athletes and alumni as a way to connect the past and present of the Lehigh rowing program.

In addition, two new boats, one for fours and one for eights, were added to Lehigh's arsenal thanks to generous donations from the Dorn family and the Lehigh rowing class of 2023. The alumni in attendance "christened" the boats by pouring water on them as part of a program tradition.

"It was special to have [Honora Campbell '22] christen 'Regatta Dog' on behalf of the Dorn family," said Costas. "The class of '23 organizing and making a donation for us to purchase an Empacher Eight, which they named 'The Packer Express 23', was really special to see them back and talk about how proud they were to support the team."

While Class Day was the final competition of the first semester for the men, the women's team will compete one more time at the Bucknell Novice Regatta on November 10 on Susquehanna River at 1 p.m.
