JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Lehigh baseball team used a balanced offensive attack and pair of four-run innings to pick up an 11-5 win at Saint Peter's Tuesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field. The victory runs Lehigh's win streak to four after the Mountain Hawks took three games from Bucknell over the weekend.
Sophomore Jacen Nalesnik went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a stolen base. Junior Mike Garzillo tallied three RBI, while both Garzillo and senior Justin Pacchioli recorded two hits apiece.
The Peacocks got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead. Lehigh answered back immediately in the top of the third when junior Mackey Price was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Pacchioli bunted for a base hit before Nalesnik singled to right field. Garzillo followed with a two-run single through the right side even the score at two. A pair of Peacock errors then allowed Nalesnik and Garzillo to score as the Mountain Hawks grabbed a 4-2 lead through two and a half.
Lehigh added a run in the fourth inning to go up 5-2 before freshman starting pitcher Mark Washington kept the Peacocks off the board through the sixth inning. The Mountain Hawks put up four more runs in the top of the seventh inning when a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Anthony Rinaldi scored senior John Elson before a fielding error on a Pacchioli groundball allowed sophomore David Young to cross the plate. Nalesnik then ripped a two-run single up the middle to send Price and sophomore Connor Donovan home and give Lehigh a 9-2 advantage.
The Peacocks weren't able to get anything off Washington until the bottom of the eighth when Saint Peter's recorded back-to-back singles and freshman John Fitz was brought on in relief of Washington. A two-run triple and a bunt single helped the Peacocks plate three runs before Young took the mound and recorded the final two outs of the frame to keep Lehigh ahead 9-5 through eight.
Rinaldi sent a base hit up the middle to open the top of the ninth before a Price sacrifice bunt, Pacchioli double and Nalesnik walk loaded the bases. Elson drew a bases-loaded walk before Young was hit by a pitch to plate two more Lehigh runs. Young was then able to close out the game on the mound in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 11-5 Mountain Hawk win.
Washington earned his first collegiate win after throwing seven strong innings and finishing with a line of four runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts. Young earned the save since he entered the game with two runners on base and the tying run on deck. Saint Peter's starter Tom Puza suffered the loss.
Lehigh and Saint Peter's wrap up their home-and-home series Wednesday at Legacy Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
