WORCESTER, Mass. – Lehigh baseball wrapped up the regular season on Sunday on the road against the Holy Cross Crusaders. The Mountain Hawks defeated the Crusaders 10-4 in a continuation of Saturday's game two before falling 17-5 in game three of the series.
Lehigh (23-24, 11-14 PL) clinched a spot in the Patriot League Championship with their win in game two. The Mountain Hawks are back into the postseason for the first time since 2022 and will return to face Holy Cross (27-22, 17-8 PL) next weekend.
Marcus Danchision earned the win game two, striking out four while allowing three runs over 5.0 innings. Cole Kochanowicz picked up his third save of the season after allowing only one run through 4.0 innings of relief. Holy Cross starter Thomas Skrobe was credited with the loss.
The scoring began in the top of the second inning when Justin Butler singled home Aidan Quinn for his first RBI of the game. The Crusaders responded with an RBI from Nick Spaner in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Butler then provided another huge play for the Mountain Hawks, delivering a grand slam in the top of the fourth that put Lehigh ahead 5-1. The Crusaders would score one more run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-2 before the game was halted in the top of the fifth due to weather.
Once game two resumed on Sunday morning, the Crusaders cut their deficit to two on a John LaFleur solo homer in the sixth inning. The Mountain Hawks then put forth two big innings in the seventh and eighth. Quinn homered to start things off in the seventh followed by a two-RBI double from Butler. A sac-fly from Ryan Cochran and RBI groundout from Ryan Davis put the Mountain Hawks ahead 10-3. Connor Peek homered for Holy Cross in the ninth, but the damage had already been done.
Butler had a monster game two, batting 4-4 with seven RBIs, a home run and a double. Jake Whitlinger, Quinn, Owen Walewander and Raffaele Rogers also provided hits for Lehigh.
Jaden Wywoda got the win in game three for the Crusaders, striking out three while allowing three runs in 3.0 innings. Liam O'Hearen was credited with the loss after allowing six runs in the first inning.
The Crusaders were firing on all cylinders out of the gate, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI single from Brendan Jones put Holy Cross ahead 10-0 after two.
The Mountain Hawks would find some offense in the third on a Rogers sac-fly and Butler two-RBI single and again in the fourth on RBIs from Dom Patrizi and Rogers to make it 11-5. However, six more unanswered runs by the Crusaders allowed Holy Cross to end the game in the eighth inning winning 17-5.
Patrizi, Rogers, Quinn, Butler, Edwin Betances, Ryan Davis and Sam Holtz tallied hits for Lehigh in game three. In addition to O'Hearen, Max Treonze, Jake Mulvehill, Tommy Lamar, David Andolina and Anthony Gonzalez appeared on the mound for the Mountain Hawks.
#4 Lehigh will face #1 Holy Cross in the Patriot League Championship semifinals on May 10-11 in Worcester. Game times are TBD.
