Lehigh Drops Game One Of Patriot League Championship Semifinals At Holy Cross

5/10/2025 10:29:00 PM | Baseball

WORCESTER, Mass. – The road to the Patriot League Baseball Championship kicked off on Saturday evening between the No. 4 Lehigh Mountain Hawks and the No. 1 Holy Cross Crusaders for game one of the semifinal round. The Mountain Hawks fell by a score of 10-0 in the first of a three-game weekend series.

Holy Cross (28-22) starter Danny Macchiarola was excellent for the Crusaders, striking out 12 batters in 8.0 scoreless innings to secure the win. The loss was credited to Lehigh (23-25) starting pitcher Marcus Danchision after he conceded three earned runs in 4.0 innings.

Game one was originally slated to begin at 1 p.m., but inclement weather forced the game time to be changed three times. Following major award recognitions for Holy Cross's Player of the Year CJ Egrie, Pitcher of the Year Jaden Wywoda and Coach of the Year Ed Kahovec as well as Lehigh's Defensive Player of the Year Jake Whitlinger prior to first pitch, the game was finally underway.

The Crusaders struck first in the bottom of the first inning after Egrie reached on an error and advanced to second, stole third and was sent home on a Chris Baillargeon sac-fly. Danchision wouldn't allow his first hit of the evening until the bottom of the third, but the Mountain Hawks were able to strand two runners on in the frame to keep the score 1-0 Crusaders through three.

The Mountain Hawk offense tallied four hits through the first four innings, all the while stranding three runners on base in the process. Macchiarola struck out nine batters in that span as well to keep Lehigh off the board. Holy Cross got another run past home plate in the fourth courtesy of a Brendan Jones sac-fly to extend the lead to 2-0.

Holy Cross's offense picked up in the fifth, scoring six runs in the stanza. Baillargeon got things started with a two-RBI single followed by a two-RBI single by Connor Peek to extend the lead to six. Gianni Royer then stole home before Peek scampered home on a throwing error to make it 8-0 Crusaders. Another run scored on an error extended the Crusader lead to nine in the sixth inning.

Lehigh's offense got a combined three runners aboard in the seventh and eighth innings but were unable to convert. Holy Cross added another run in the bottom of the eighth on a triple by Royer, extending the lead to ten. Marco Citro entered the game in relief of Macchiarola in the top of the ninth and retired the side to secure the shutout and game one victory for the Crusaders.

Aidan Quinn led the way offensively for the Mountain Hawks, going 3-4 on the evening. Ryan Cochran delivered two hits while Owen Walewander and Andrew Kohl also recorded hits for Lehigh. Cole Kochanowicz and David Andolina also appeared on the mound for the Mountain Hawks.

The Mountain Hawks will play game two of the Patriot League Championship semifinals on Sunday, May 11 at 2 p.m. from Fitton Field. Game three will take place immediately after game two if necessary.
