Lehigh Forces Game Three, Falls To Holy Cross In Patriot League Championship Semifinals

5/11/2025 10:09:00 PM | Baseball

WORCESTER, Mass. – No. 4 Lehigh baseball returned to Fitton Field on the campus of the No. 1 College of the Holy Cross Crusaders on Sunday afternoon for games two and three of the Patriot League Championship semifinals. The Mountain Hawks forced game three with a 7-2 victory in game two and fell 19-9 in game three.

Holy Cross (29-23) advances to their first Patriot League Championship series since 2017 with the win. Lehigh's (24-26) season comes to an end after making their first postseason appearance since 2022.

Liam O'Hearen earned the win for the Mountain Hawks in game two, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings of relief with nine strikeouts and two hits. Holy Cross starter Jaden Wywoda was credited with the loss after allowing three earned runs in 5.2 innings on seven hits with six strikeouts.

Noah Gyauch-Quirk was slated to start the game for the Mountain Hawks, but Jake Mulvehill was Lehigh's pitcher on the mound in the bottom of the first. The Crusaders took an early 2-0 on a Jimmy King sac-fly and Gianni Royer RBI single.

Owen Walewander got things started for the Mountain Hawks in the top of the second, delivering a leadoff homer to left field. Mulvehill then settled down over the next two innings, including back-to-back strikeouts of King and Royer to end the third. O'Hearen entered the game for Mulvehill in the fourth, leaving two stranded for the Crusaders and then retired the side 1-2-3 in the fifth.

The Mountain Hawks' offense threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with only one out on the board. Lehigh took advantage, scoring three runs on a throwing error by Wywoda and a Justin Butler RBI single. Sam Holtz then batted home Raffaele Rogers on an RBI single to put Lehigh ahead 5-2 while prompting a Holy Cross pitching change.

O'Hearen made quick work of the Crusaders again in the sixth, going three up three down once again. The sophomore then faced a two-runners on situation in the seventh but evaded the jam to keep Holy Cross off the board. O'Hearen once again allowed a baserunner in the eighth but struck out his eighth batter of the afternoon to send Lehigh to the ninth inning with the lead.

The Mountain Hawks added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Owen Walewander and sac-bunt from Rogers. Leading 7-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, O'Hearen shut down the Crusaders to seal the game two victory for Lehigh.

Aidan Quinn hit 3-5 in game two with two runs scored while Walewander and Holtz both tallied two hits. Jake Whitlinger recorded his 200th career hit in game two, becoming only the eighth player in program history to do so. Ryan Cochran and Butler also got hits for the Mountain Hawks.

Holy Cross reliever Luke LeMond received the win, striking out six in 2.2 innings of relief. Pedro Leon earned the save with five strikeouts in 2.1 innings. The loss was credited to Marcus Danchision.

Lehigh got two runners aboard in the top of the first, but a flyout and pop-up prevented any runs from scoring. Holy Cross took advantage of their baserunners in the bottom of the frame, taking an early 3-0 lead.

The Mountain Hawks quickly responded in the second thanks to a massive two-run blast to left field by Andrew Kohl to make it 3-2. Max Treonze entered the game for Lehigh in relief of starter David Andolina in the bottom of the second, escaping a bases loaded jam to keep the deficit at one.

Treonze once again helped strand two Holy Cross batters in the bottom of the third to keep the Mountain Hawks within striking distance. Lehigh took advantage of their baserunners in the fourth, scoring four runs in the inning. Dom Patrizi doubled home two runs, a run scored on an error and Walewander singled home Cochran to put Lehigh ahead 6-3.

Lehigh found another opportunity in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs. However, LeMond struck out his batter to prevent the damage. Holy Cross responded with a bases loaded opportunity of their own, but Cochran saved the inning for Lehigh with a spectacular over the back catch in shallow right field.

After pitching 4.2 scoreless innings, Treonze was replaced by Saturday's starter Danchision and game two's starter Mulvehill in the bottom of the sixth. The Crusaders managed to tie the game in the inning, scoring three on a two-RBI double from Connor Peek and an RBI single from Brendan Jones. Three more runs scored for Holy Cross on a passed ball and two-RBI single from John LaFleur, and suddenly the Mountain Hawks trailed 9-6.

With two outs on the board in the top of the seventh, the Mountain Hawks began to rally. Cochran singled home Holtz and Whitlinger to pull within one run with two innings remaining. However, Holy Cross sent six runs of their own past the plate to set the score at 15-8 through seven. The Crusaders added an additional four runs in the eighth to win by a score of 19-9.

Whitlinger, Quinn and Holtz all recorded two hits in game three. Patrizi, Cochran, Walewander, Butler and Kohl also nabbed hits for the Mountain Hawks. Jack Hamilton and Tommy Lamar also saw action on the mound for Lehigh.

The Mountain Hawks now set their sights on the offseason.
