BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team and Saint Peter's combined for 25 runs on 24 hits in an offensive slugfest Wednesday afternoon at Legacy Park as the Peacocks came out on top 16-9.
Senior Patrick Walshe led Lehigh with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate and three RBI. Junior Mackey Price recorded the first home run of his collegiate career and finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The Mountain Hawks jumped on the board right away in the bottom of the inning as a senior Justin Pacchioli led off the inning with a single through the left side. Sophomore Jacen Nalesnik drew a walk before both Mountain Hawks moved up a base on a wild pitch. A single to left off the bat of junior Mike Garzillo was coupled with a Peacock fielding error as Pacchioli and Nalesnik crossed the plate. Another Saint Peter's error on a fly ball from sophomore Patrick Donnelly allowed Garzillo to score before Walshe sent an RBI single through the left side and Lehigh took a 4-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
The Peacocks got on the board in the third inning thanks to a sacrifice fly before putting up five unearned runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead. Walshe took the first pitch of his leadoff at bat in the bottom of the fourth inning and sent it over the left field fence to get a run back for the Mountain Hawks and narrow the Saint Peter's advantage to 6-5.
The Peacocks added a run in the fifth before putting up three in the sixth to extend their lead to 10-5. Sophomore David Young led off the sixth inning with a single up the middle and freshman James Bleming followed with a base on balls. Junior Mackey Price sent his first career home run, a three-run shot, over the left field fence to bring the Mountain Hawks back into the game and narrow the Peacock lead to 10-8.
Saint Peter's outscored Lehigh 6-1 in the final three innings to claim the 16-9 win. Freshman reliever Michael Schwab suffered the loss on the mound, while Saint Peter's Paul Schifilliti earned the win.
Lehigh resumes Patriot League play this weekend when the Mountain Hawks head to first-place Holy Cross for a four-game series.
