EASTON, Pa. – The 2026 season's first installment of The Rivalry took place between Lehigh baseball and the Lafayette Leopards on Friday afternoon from Kamine Stadium in Easton. A duel between starting pitchers resulted in a low-scoring 4-2 win for the Leopards.
Lafayette (8-26, 4-13 PL) was led by a standout performance from starter Tristan Helmick, who went 7.0 complete innings with 14 strikeouts, five hits, and two earned runs to earn the win. Max Treonze was the only pitcher to appear in the game for Lehigh (10-25, 4-13 PL), tossing 8.0 innings with seven strikeouts, seven hits, and only two earned runs despite being credited with the loss. Lafayette's Owen Basso picked up his first save of the season.
The Mountain Hawks struck first in the top of the first inning with an RBI single from Ian Wirtz to take a 1-0 lead. The Leopards responded in the latter half of the inning, plating two runs on RBIs from Matt Colella and Brandon Doubek. Lafayette added additional runs in the second and third innings to lead 4-1 through three innings.
Helmick and Treonze continued to duel, as both put up scoreless frames in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. The Mountain Hawks cut their deficit in half in the seventh thanks to a Robbie Carvelli RBI single, setting the score at 4-2. Basso then entered the game for Helmick in the eighth, recording five strikeouts while facing eight batters in the final two innings to snap a nine-game Lafayette losing streak.
Aidan Quinn and Carvelli both went 2-4 on the day while Max Dantoni, Crawford, and Wirtz provided Lehigh's other hits.
The Mountain Hawks return to Easton for a doubleheader against the Leopards on Saturday, April 18 beginning at 12 p.m.
