EASTON, Pa. – Lehigh baseball returned to Kamine Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader against rival Lafayette College. The Mountain Hawks defeated the Leopards 3-2 in a seven-inning game one before winning game two by a score of 8-7 to secure the doubleheader sweep.
After only using one pitcher in game one of the series, Lehigh (12-25, 6-13 PL) did it again in game two. Starter Sam Fairhurst threw a complete 7.0 innings with eight strikeouts, three hits, and only one earned run to earn the win. Lafayette (8-28, 4-15 PL) starter Gregory Quintana was credited with the loss despite a solid stat line of seven strikeouts and three earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched.
Fairhurst and Quintana dueled through the first three innings, as neither pitcher allowed a run in the opening three frames. The Leopards struck first in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run homer from Boden Fernsler to give Lafayette a 2-0 lead. After being retired 1-2-3 in the fifth, a leadoff home run from Aidan Quinn brought Lehigh within one run after six innings.
Down to their final three outs in the top of the seventh, Ryan Davis walked to begin the inning. Cadeyrn Ahearn then pinch hit for Robby Grasso and crushed a home run to right center, bringing the Lehigh dugout to its feet and lifting the Mountain Hawks to their first lead of the day at 3-2. Despite walking the first batter in the bottom of the seventh, Fairhurst forced three consecutive outs to secure the game one victory for Lehigh.
Ian Wirtz went 2-3 in game one while Robbie Carvelli, Quinn, and Ahearn provided Lehigh's other hits in game one.
Starting pitcher Cole Leaman received the win for Lehigh after notching ten strikeouts while only allowing four hits and one earned run in 6.0 innings. Declan Wilkes earned his first career save after closing out the final 1.1 innings of the game. The loss was credited to Lafayette starter Alex Payne.
The Leopards scored first in game two in the bottom of the first inning on a sac-bunt from Brandon Doubek. Dom Patrizi responded for the Mountain Hawks in the top of the second with a solo home run before a sac-fly from Wirtz in the third inning gave Lehigh a 2-1 advantage.
Lafayette tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third on an RBI from Will Dobil. Two runs came across the plate for Lehigh in the top of the fourth on RBIs from Silvio Giardina and Carvelli to lead 4-2, an advantage the Mountain Hawks would hold until the seventh inning. Another sac-fly from Wirtz in the seventh and an RBI from Giardina on a fielder's choice lifted the Mountain hawks to a 6-2 lead.
Doubek kept the Leopards in the game in the eighth, delivering a two-run homer to left field to cut their deficit in half. However, the Mountain Hawks added two runs of insurance in the top of the ninth that gave Lehigh a four-run advantage. Despite a late push and three-run bottom of the ninth from Lafayette, Wilkes struck out Charlie Chropuvka to record the final out of game two.
Jack Frankovic had a big day at the plate in game two, going 4-5 with an RBI. Carvelli, Quinn, Patrizi, and Giardina each recorded two hits in game two. Owen Walewander and Max Dantoni also got hits for Lehigh in game two. Cole Kochanowicz appeared on the mound in addition to Leaman and Wilkes.
The Mountain Hawks will conclude the season series with the Leopards on Sunday, April 19 at 12 p.m. at Kamine Stadium in Easton.
