Lehigh Breaks NCAA And Patriot League Records In 38-6 Win At Coppin State

Lehigh (10-24, 4-12 PL) sent 20 runs across home plate in the top of the first inning, which broke a record set over 50 years ago. Senior Aidan Quinn drew seven walks, making him stand alone in NCAA history for most walks drawn by a single player in a game. Finally, Lehigh's 38 runs are the most runs ever scored in a game by a Patriot League team.
The win was awarded to reliever Noah Gyauch-Quirk after he struck out four batters in 2.0 scoreless innings. Coppin State (7-24, 7-11 NEC) starter Mekenna Wakakuwa was credited with the loss after being tagged for eight earned runs without recording an out in the top of the first.
Lehigh's barrage of runs began right at the start of the game, beginning with three RBIs from Ian Wirtz and Cadeyrn Ahearn. Following Wirtz and Ahearn's hits, the Mountain Hawks scored 13 runs in a row all from bases loaded walks, hit by pitches, or wild pitches. An Owen Walewander grand slam put a bow on Lehigh's record setting 20-run first inning.
After the Eagles added a run in the bottom of the first, the Mountain Hawks plated four more runs between the second and third innings to lead by 23. Coppin State sent three runs past the plate in the bottom of the third before a seven-run top of the fourth gave Lehigh a staggering 31-4 advantage.
Leading 32-6 entering the sixth, Walewander delivered another RBI single in the top of the frame. The Mountain Hawks then added five more runs in the top of the seventh to score their Patriot League record-breaking 38th run of the day.
Walewander had a huge day at the plate, batting 4-5 with eight RBIs, a double, a home run, and five runs scored. Ahearn went 2-2 with three RBIs and five runs scored while Robby Grasso batted 2-3 with an RBI and a double. Max Dantoni, Wirtz, Edwin Betances, and Dom Patrizi also recorded hits for the Mountain Hawks.
Ryan Holman started on the mound for Lehigh. Nick Hayden, Grady Golier, and Tommy Lamar also saw action on the mound in addition to Holman and Gyauch-Quirk.
The Mountain Hawks will make the quick trip to Easton this upcoming weekend for a four-game series against rival Lafayette. Game one is slated for 3 p.m. on Friday, April 17 in Easton.
