Lehigh Defeats Army 9-7 In Series Finale

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball concluded its weekend series with the Army West Point Black Knights on Sunday afternoon from J. David Walker Field. The Mountain Hawks recorded 15 hits and scored nine runs to defeat the Black Knights 9-7.

First-year Declan Wilkes earned the first win of his career for Lehigh (9-24, 4-12 PL) after allowing no runs or hits in 2.0 innings to close out the game. Anthony Ramirez was tagged with the loss for Army (18-15, 9-7 PL) after allowing three earned runs in 1.2 innings of relief.

The Black Knights got on the board first in the top of the first inning when William Parker scored Josiah Overbeek on a fielder's choice. However, the Mountain Hawks responded in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs in the frame. Edwin Betances batted home Robbie Carvelli and Ian Wirtz on a two-RBI single before Silvio Giardina sent Betances and Dom Patrizi home on another two-RBI single to give Lehigh a 4-1 lead. An additional Wirtz RBI pushed the Lehigh lead to four runs in the bottom of the third.

Army began to chip away at its deficit in the fourth, cutting the Lehigh lead to two on RBIs from Overbeek and Chris Barr. The Black Knights added another in the top of the sixth on a Barr RBI before a two-RBI single from Mason Scott in the seventh gave the Black Knights the lead. Army plated another run on an error in the top of the eighth to lead 7-5 with only six outs remaining for Lehigh.

The Mountain Hawks rallied in the bottom of the eighth, with an RBI double from Owen Walewander getting things started for Lehigh. Carvelli then singled home Walewander to tie the game 7-7. Patrizi singled home Wirtz before a throwing error allowed Carvelli to cross home plate, lifting Lehigh to a 9-7 lead. Wilkes retired the Black Knights in four batters in the top of the ninth to secure the win for the Mountain Hawks.

Aidan Quinn, Walewander, Trystan Crawford, Wirtz, Carvelli, and Patrizi all recorded two hits on the afternoon while Max Dantoni, Betances, and Giardina also logged hits for the Mountain Hawks.

Jackson Shepelsky, Noah Gyauch-Quirk, Max Treonze, and Cole Kochanowicz also saw action on the mound in Sunday's win.

The Mountain Hawks will next take on the Coppin State Eagles in Baltimore on Tuesday, April 14 at 3 p.m.
