Lehigh Drops Game One At Holy Cross, Game Two To Resume Sunday

5/3/2025 5:51:00 PM | Baseball

WORCESTER, Mass. – Lehigh baseball kicked off its final weekend of the regular season on Saturday in a scheduled doubleheader against the Holy Cross Crusaders. The Mountain Hawks were bested 24-7 in game one before game two was halted in the top of the fifth inning due to inclement weather.

Lehigh (22-23, 10-13 PL) entered the weekend controlling their own destiny to make the postseason, currently sitting in the fourth and final position. With today's results, the Mountain Hawks now need to take one of tomorrow's scheduled two games against first place Holy Cross (26-21, 16-7 PL) in order to secure a spot in the postseason.

Danny Macchiarola picked up the win for the Crusaders in game one, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Lehigh starter Jack Hamilton received the loss after allowing four runs in the first inning.

The Crusaders offense was firing on all cylinders through the first three innings of action, starting the game with four runs in the first followed up by six runs in the second. Holy Cross then blew the game open in the third with a massive 12-run frame to go up 22-0. An additional run in the fourth gave the Crusaders a 23-0 advantage.

The Mountain Hawks found some offense in the latter innings, starting with an Andrew Kohl two-run homer in the fifth. Kohl moved into a tie for fourth place all-time in program history with 22 career home runs.

Edwin Betances provided two more runs in the sixth inning on a two-RBI single with the bases loaded. After the Crusaders scored another run in the sixth, a Joey Esposito three-run homer to left field gave the Mountain Hawks their fifth, sixth and seventh runs of the afternoon.

Esposito went 3-3 on the day with three RBIs, a double and a home run. Reid Uccello, Owen Walewander, Betances and Kohl provided Lehigh's other hits. In addition to Hamilton, the Mountain Hawks turned to Grady Golier, Jack Ingino and Ralph Gariano on the mound.

Lehigh and Holy Cross will pick up game two on Sunday, May 4 at 11 a.m. with a 5-1 score in the top of the fifth inning.
