Lehigh finishes action at Murphy Cup

PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh competed at the 2009 Murphy Cup on Saturday, sending seven crews to compete on the Schuylkill River versus a tough field of competitors. The men’s varsity 8 won the petite final as they crossed in a time of 6:02.21, defeating Army, St. Joseph’s, Delaware and Iona. That followed a finish of 6:03.60 in the crew’s opening heat when they raced past archrival Lafayette to secure a spot in the petite final.
The women’s varsity 8 finished in a time of 7:03.18 in their opening heat, defeating Fairfield along the way, while the JV 8 crossed in front of Sacred Heart and finished their heat with a time of 7:33.00. The freshmen 8 crossed in 7:49.14 and the lightweight varsity 8 defeated Lafayette and Duquesne during their race with a time of 7:13.07.
On the men’s side, the JV 8 crossed in 6:19.93, which was five seconds faster than the crew from Drexel, and the freshmen 8 finished in a time of 6:27.37, which placed them ahead of Fordham, Bucknell and Pittsburgh.
Lehigh is back in action on Saturday, April 4 when the Mountain Hawks host Iona and Franklin & Marshall on the Lehigh River. The first race is scheduled for 10:30 AM in Allentown.
