BETHLEHEM, Pa. – All eyes were on Stabler Arena on Monday evening as Lehigh men's basketball played host to the Colgate Raiders in front of a national audience on CBS Sports Network. The Mountain Hawks put on an offensive clinic, shooting 60% from the field on route to a 94-68 victory.
"I felt like our team unity on defense and offense was very high," said head coach Dr. Brett Reed. "Guys were willing and able to share the basketball, which was something that you need to do against Colgate."
Monday's win marks the first for Lehigh (9-13, 4-7 PL) over Colgate (9-15, 6-5 PL) since the 2021-22 season, snapping an eight-game Raiders win streak. Lehigh's 26-point margin of victory is the second-highest against Colgate in team history only to a 95-54 win over the Raiders in 1989.
The Mountain Hawks and Raiders found themselves in a very competitive first half that saw two lead changes and five ties. Colgate's Jeff Woodward got the scoring started with a bucket underneath on the opening possession of the game followed by a Brady Cummins step-back to put the Raiders ahead 4-0. Lehigh responded with back-to-back triples from first-year Edouard Benoit and sophomore Cam Gillus, sparking a Mountain Hawk run that put the team ahead 13-8 at the 13:48 mark in the first half. The teams continued to trade buckets throughout the frame until a 7-0 swing pulled Lehigh ahead by eight with under seven to play. However, Colgate rallied back, tying the contest at 34-34 off of a Nicolas Louis-Jacques three with under two in the half. After Benoit responded with a three on the other end, Louis-Jacques hit another to keep the score tied. In the final minute of the half, a Joshua Ingram triple and Nasir Whitlock layup pushed Lehigh ahead by five headed into the locker room.
After shooting 58.6% from the floor and 50.0% from three in the first half, the Mountain Hawks improved upon those percentages in the second. Lehigh blitzed the Raiders in the final frame, outscoring Colgate 52-31 on 61.3%/61.5% shooting splits. Colgate brought the Lehigh lead to within one early in the period, but a 23-6 Mountain Hawk run from that point put the home team ahead by 18 with under ten minutes left in the game. Lehigh continued to fire on all cylinders, shooting 75% from the field for the remainder of the game. A Peter Kramer layup with 36 seconds to go gave Lehigh its largest lead of the night at 26 and put a cap on a massive home victory for the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh shot a remarkable 60.0% (36-60) from the floor and 55.6% (15-27) from three while Colgate posted percentages of 41.7% (25-60) and 36.7% (11-30). Lehigh's 15 three-pointers tie the school record for most three-point field goals made in a game, a feat the Mountain Hawks haven't reached since 2018. Lehigh also owned a 34-25 advantage on the glass over Colgate, putting the Mountain Hawks' record at 6-0 when they outrebound their opponent this season.
All 11 active players touched the floor for Lehigh tonight while nine of them found the back of the net. Eight student-athletes scored six or more points while four of those players scored in double-figures.
"Look at the balance that we had tonight," said Reed. "Not only did we have multiple guys in double figures, we also had multiple guys in very high single digits as well."
Gillus led the way offensively with 19 points on an efficient 7-10 from the field and 5-7 from three. The sophomore also grabbed a team-high six rebounds while dishing out three assists.
Whitlock tallied 17 points off the bench to go along with five rebounds and three assists. His performance comes after scoring a career-high 23 against the Raiders in the season's first matchup on January 8.
"Coming into the game, I knew that my mid-range was effective last time," said Whitlock. "I try not to focus on that, just focus on what the defense gives me."
Ingram tallied a season-high 14 points on 4-7 shooting with five rebounds and three assists of his own. First-year Alfredo Addesa tallied a new career-high for the second-straight game, notching 11 points and three made triples off the bench.
"Alfredo was magnificent," said Reed. "You look at his plus/minus differential and his impact in the minutes he got, it was incredible. It was a game changer with his ability to shoot the basketball."
"If I had one word to describe Alfredo, I would say a dog," said Whitlock. "I love him, he just goes out there and competes and plays hard. I told him before the game that today is your game, just trying to keep him confident and let him know his time is coming."
Also scoring for Lehigh was Benoit (9p), senior Tyler Whitney-Sidney (9p), senior Ben Knostman (7p), first-year Hank Alvey (6p) and Kramer (2p).
Woodward and Jalen Cox led Colgate offensively with 14 points apiece while Parker Jones joined them in double-figures with 12.
The Mountain Hawks won't play again until Saturday, February 8 when the team hosts first-place American at Stabler Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
