ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Following a two-game homestand, Lehigh men's basketball returned to the road on Wednesday evening to take on the Navy Midshipmen for the second time this season. Three Mountain Hawks reached double-figures in a narrow 63-60 loss to the Mids.
"Our defense was strong, our guys were battling, competing and working their tails off. We just couldn't put the ball in the rim," said head coach Dr. Brett Reed. "We got a lot of good looks, we had our opportunities and could not convert. When you have that type of offensive output, it puts so much pressure on your defense."
Navy (9-17, 6-7 PL) picked up their second victory over Lehigh (9-15, 4-9 PL) on the season after earning a 79-54 win over the Mountain Hawks two weeks ago at Stabler Arena. The win slots Navy into the sixth seed in the Patriot League while Lehigh currently sits in the ninth.
Offense was hard to come by for both teams in the first half, particularly in the opening minutes. An Edouard Benoit free throw opened the game's scoring, but an 8-0 Navy run put the Mids ahead by seven with 12:37 to play. Lehigh's first field goal of the game came at the 11:37 mark by way of a Joshua Ingram step-back triple that cut the lead to three. While the Mountain Hawks continued to struggle from the field, the Midshipmen began to mount a small run that put them ahead by as many as 12. In the final minute, Ingram converted a dunk on a baseline cut to set the score at 26-16 in favor of Navy at halftime.
After both offenses shot under 35% from the floor in the opening frame, the game's offensive production began to ramp up in the second half. Both teams shot percentages north of 40% in the final twenty minutes. Navy's Jordan Pennick increased his team's lead to 15 in the early stages with a personal 8-3 run to start the half. The Mountain Hawks then responded with a short run of their own to cut the lead to seven, highlighted by a Tyler Whitney-Sidney and-one finish at the rim. Navy continually maintained a lead that hovered around ten points for the majority of the second stanza until the Mountain Hawks began to chip away late. Back-to-back Ben Knostman and Whitney-Sidney baskets cut Navy's lead to four with just over two minutes to play. Despite Lehigh's efforts, the Mids knocked down their chances at the free throw line in the final 30 seconds to help ice the game.
Lehigh posted percentages of 37.1% (23-62) from the field and 38.9% (7-18) from three while Navy shot 38.2% (21-55) from the floor and 35.0% (7-20) from three. Navy found a slim 41-38 advantage on the glass while the game's biggest difference came at the free throw line. Lehigh shot 50.0% (7-14) from the charity stripe while Navy shot 70.0% (14-20).
Whitney-Sidney led the team offensively with 17 points on 7-14 shooting. The senior guard scored his 1,368th career point in the loss, tying him with Kahron Ross for 16th on Lehigh's all-time scoring list.
Tying his season-high was Ingram, who tallied 14 points while knocking down a career-best four triples. Joining Whitney-Sidney and Ingram in double-figures was Knostman, who posted 11 points on an efficient 5-7 from the field to go along with six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Austin Benigni scored a game-high 21 points for the Midshipmen. He was joined in double-figures by Lysander Rehnstrom (11p) and Jordan Pennick (10p).
The Mountain Hawks return to Stabler Arena on Saturday, February 15 to host Senior Day against Holy Cross. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
