BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Led by a 30-point performance by junior captain Nasir Whitlock, Lehigh men's basketball erased a 13-point second half deficit to defeat the Boston University Terriers 70-67 on Sunday afternoon at Stabler Arena. The win marked Murray H. Goodman '48 head coach Brett Reed's 300th career victory.
"I'm incredibly impressed by our guys' fight," said Reed. "I thought they did a great job despite Boston playing very well. You have to be able to score to keep up with them, but we ended up changing our defense, guys were adaptable, and they continued to try to work together."
Lehigh (13-16, 9-7 PL) has now swept the season series with BU (13-16, 8-8 PL) after beating the Terriers 93-91 in overtime at Case Gymnasium on January 14. Reed becomes only the second coach in Patriot League history to surpass 300 career wins.
The game was low scoring through the first ten minutes of action, as BU held a 13-12 advantage at the under 12 media timeout. Chance Gladden knocked down a three to put the Terriers up by four, but thanks to a foul on the floor after the shot went up, BU was able to extend their lead to six on back-to-back possessions. A Ben Defty layup gave the Terriers a 22-14 advantage and forced Lehigh to call timeout with 6:25 to play.
Jalen Vazquez knocked down a triple out of the break that cut Lehigh's deficit to five. Another triple from Whitlock shortened the deficit to four at 26-22. A couple possessions later, Whitlock drilled a three that brought Lehigh within one, prompting a BU timeout. The junior captain then scored an acrobatic driving layup with 37 seconds to go that gave Lehigh a 29-28 halftime lead.
BU opened the second half on a 7-0 run to regain a 35-29 lead. A Whitlock and-one cut the lead to three, but a 5-0 response from the Terriers forced the Mountain Hawks to call timeout. Lehigh shortened the gap to four on baskets from Andrew Urosevic, Joshua Ingram, and Hank Alvey before BU's Michael McNair extended his team's lead to ten with 12:33 to go on with a personal 8-2 run.
After a Urosevic jumper cut the deficit to eight, BU gained a 13-point advantage on an Azmar Abdullah three and pull-up jumper from Donte Tisinger Jr. The Mountain Hawks began chipping away at the BU lead, setting the score at 59-51 after another Whitlock and-one. A corner-three from Ingram cut the lead to five with just under seven minutes to play.
Lehigh continued to storm back down the stretch, trimming the lead to one on a Vazquez layup to cap off a 10-0 run. Two more Vazquez free throws with 4:41 on the clock gave Lehigh its first lead since the start of the second half. BU briefly went back in front by one, but an Alvey free throw and Whitlock jumper gave the Mountain Hawks a 63-61 advantage with 2:26 remaining in the game.
Peter Kramer extended Lehigh's lead to five with a corner three with just under two minutes remaining. Defty brought BU within three before a defensive stop allowed Defty to cut Lehigh's lead to one with 37 seconds to go. Whitlock then dribbled out the clock and connected on a pull-up jumper to give Lehigh a 68-65 advantage with 8.9 seconds left in the game. Trailing by three, McNair was fouled while taking a three-pointer and had an opportunity to tie the game. McNair went 2-3 from the line, forcing the Terriers to foul. Whitlock made two more at the line to extend the lead to three. Gladden's three-pointer at the buzzer missed to secure the Mountain Hawks' victory.
Lehigh finished the day shooting 50.0% (25-50) from the floor, 42.1% (8-19) from three, and a precise 92.3% (12-13) from the free throw line. BU shot 50.0% (28-56) from the field, 33.3% (7-21) from distance, and 80.0% (4-5) from the charity stripe. The Mountain Hawks outrebounded the Terriers 28-25, which included eight Lehigh offensive rebounds.
Whitlock came through for Lehigh once again, scoring 30 points on 9-16 shooting and a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line. The junior dished out four assists, hit three triples, and grabbed a steal. Whitlock has scored 30+ points seven times this season, which ties him for the most in the country.
"Our guys did a good job of giving [Nasir] space and creating advantages and opportunities for him," said Reed. "He had a great night despite the amount of defensive pressure and intensity he was facing."
Vazquez was huge for the Mountain Hawks on both ends, scoring ten points with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Alvey put up nine points, three rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. Kramer chipped in eight points off the bench while Ingram added seven points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Both McNair and Gladden led the Terriers in scoring with 17 points apiece. Defty finished the day with 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
The Mountain Hawks will be back in action on Wednesday, February 25 at 7 p.m. to face American University in Washington, D.C. The winner of Wednesday's game will hold sole possession of third place in the Patriot League standings.
