BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball welcomed rival Lafayette to J. David Walker Field on Wednesday afternoon in a season series-deciding midweek clash. The Leopards used an offensive explosion in the top of the seventh to claim a 13-3 victory in seven innings.
Adam Bogosian picked up the win for Lafayette (11-27, 6-9 PL) after entering in relief of starter Joey Pence, allowing one run in 4.1 innings. Brandon Coughlin was credited with the loss for Lehigh (19-16-1, 6-9 PL) after conceding Lafayette's go-ahead run in the seventh inning.
Julio Ermigiotti started on the mound for the Mountain Hawks, throwing 2.2 innings before being replaced. The first-year retired the side 1-2-3 to begin the game and escaped a jam in the second to keep the game scoreless through two innings. However, a Blaze Fadio 2RBI single and subsequent sac-bunt from Easton Brenner in the third inning put the Leopards ahead by three.
In the bottom of the third, Lehigh responded with two runs of their own to cut into the Leopard lead. Jake Whitlinger got things started with a sac-fly to center field that scored Riley Davis followed by a Ryan Cochran RBI single that sent Andrew Kohl past home plate.
The Mountain Hawks continued to trail 3-2 over the next several innings until Justin Butler reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth, allowing Tyler Young to come home and tie the game. However, this made way for a massive seventh inning from Lafayette. The Leopards recorded ten runs on six hits in the frame, facing four different Lehigh pitchers to take a 13-3 lead headed into the bottom of the inning. Lehigh was unable to score in the corresponding half inning, resulting in the game being called.
Lehigh is next in action this weekend for a three-game series in Annapolis, Md. against Navy. Game one of a doubleheader against the Midshipmen will be played at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 20.
