Lehigh Drops Two In Saturday Doubleheader At Navy

4/20/2024 6:51:00 PM | Baseball

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Lehigh baseball opened a three-game road series on Saturday afternoon against Navy Midshipmen. The Mountain Hawks fell 12-2 in a seven-inning game one and dropped game two by a score of 10-4 to the Midshipmen.

Cole Leaman started on the mound for Lehigh (19-18-1, 6-11 PL) in game one, striking out four in 5.0 innings pitched while conceding two earned runs. The win was awarded to Navy (23-16, 13-8 PL) starter Tyler Grenn, who posted a complete 7.0 innings with six strikeouts and two earned runs allowed.

The Midshipmen got off to a fast start against the Mountain Hawks, using Brock Murtha's two-run homer in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. However, the score remained the same over the next three innings thanks to great play on the mound and in the field from both schools.

It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth inning when Navy began to see their lead increase. Zane Raba got things started with an RBI single before a Murtha sac-fly put the Mids up by four. A Victor Izquierdo double allowed two more runs to cross home plate, setting the score at 6-0 in favor of Navy.

After Lehigh went scoreless in the sixth, the Midshipmen continued to roll offensively in the bottom of the frame. Navy added six more runs to take a 12-0 lead headed into the seventh and final inning of game one. The Mountain Hawks would add two runs in the seventh, but it was all too late, and the Midshipmen earned a big game one win.

Earning the win in game two was Navy's Nolan Jorgenson, who tossed 5.0 innings in relief of starter Matthew Shirah. The loss was credited to Lehigh starter Teddy Tolliver, who conceded five runs in 5.1 innings pitched.

While Navy opened the scoring in game one, Lehigh did the honors in game two. After a scoreless first and second inning, the Mountain Hawks pushed three runs across the plate in the third. Rafe Perich's single to left center scored Whitlinger for the game's first run followed by an RBI from Riley Davis and a Raffaele Rogers single that set the score 3-0 after three innings.

The Midshipmen were able to respond two innings later in the fifth, as Navy tied the game after a scoreless top half from Lehigh. Navy's Jack Killelea connected on a three-run homer to right field off of Tolliver that tied the game 3-3. The Midshipmen repeated that performance in the sixth, as a bases-clearing double from Anthony Fiallo put Navy ahead 6-3 after six.

Trailing 6-3, the Mountain Hawks cut into the Navy lead in the seventh thanks to a Perich double that scored Ryan Cochran. Unfortunately for them, a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Midshipmen to wipe away that run. Navy added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to six, a deficit that Lehigh ultimately could not overcome.

The Mountain Hawks will play one final game against the Midshipmen in Annapolis on Sunday, April 21 at 1 p.m.
