10/6/2024 6:51:00 PM | Men's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA – One week removed from an impressive showing at the Lehigh Invite in Bethlehem, Lehigh men's tennis traveled south for the Saint Joseph's Fall Invitational. The event was broken down into three separate singles brackets and two doubles brackets.
The Mountain Hawks were joined by Bryant, Chestnut Hill, Drexel, Franklin & Marshall, Harford Community College, Jefferson, NJIT, Temple, Villanova and the hosting Saint Joseph's Hawks from Friday through Sunday. Eight singles players competed across the Crimson, Gray and Black flights for Lehigh while four doubles teams across two flights were also in action.
Play began in Philadelphia at 8 a.m. on Friday, with first-year Ofer Hacohen and junior Jackson Morash both getting their days started in the Crimson and Gray flights respectively. Hacohen fell 6-4, 6-3 to Mario Antonio of Jefferson while Morash was bested by Villanova's Thomas Wakefield 6-3, 1-6, 10-6.
Benedict Horn-Bourque earned the first win of the day for the Mountain Hawks by way of a three-set victory over his adversary from Villanova. Victor Imanishi, Luke Donovan, Jose Murariu and Wyeth Anzilotti all dropped their opening matches to send them to the consolation bracket in their respective flights. After receiving a bye, first-year Nate Raney won his first match in two sets over Saint Joseph's John Butler. Singles play concluded for Lehigh on Friday when Horn-Bourque dropped his second-round matchup with Matthew Dubas from Saint Joseph's, eliminating him from singles competition.
Three doubles matches took place on Friday for Lehigh, starting with Anzilotti/Morash who earned a 6-1 decision over Harford. Horn-Bourque/Raney and Donovan/Imanishi also won their matchups to advance to the next day of doubles competition.
In the singles consolation brackets, Hacohen, Imanishi and Donovan were eliminated after falling in their respective matchups. Morash won his first match against Severin Risan of NJIT and followed that up with an 8-6 win over Bryant's Manveer Boparai to advance to the Gray flight consolation final. Anzilotti would meet him there, as the junior earned wins over Tristan Duval of Harford and Quincy Jones of Villanova. Due to Anzilotti and Morash being on the same team, the two did not play their consolation final.
On the doubles side, Anzilotti/Morash dropped their opening match on Saturday, eliminating them from their bracket. Horn-Bourque/Raney and Donovan/Imanishi each advanced in their brackets, but both ultimately failed to reach the finals.
Raney, who won his first matchup on Friday, continued to shine throughout the weekend. The first-year earned a narrow three-set victory against Bryant's Jean-Christophe Baril to advance to the Black flight semifinals. He met Temple's Harshith Pennabadi in the semis, defeating him 6-4, 6-4 to earn a spot in the finals on Sunday. Despite an impressive showing, Raney was bested by Drexel's Antonio Franquis in the Black flight finals.
Next up on Lehigh's schedule are ITA Regionals, which are being hosted by Penn. The Mountain Hawks will compete over the course of five days from Thursday, October 17 to Monday, October 21.
