Mountain Hawks Finish Sixth at The Doc Gimmler

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Behind a top-5 finish from graduate student David Hurly, the Lehigh men's golf team finished sixth out of 15 teams at the Doc Gimmler, a two-day, 54-hole event contested Saturday and Sunday, hosted by St. John's on the Red Course at Bethpage State Park.
 
Lehigh finished the 54-hole event at one under par 839, posting back-to-back rounds of two under par 278 on Saturday and finishing at three over par 283 on Sunday.
 
One of four Lehigh golfers to make his season debut at The Doc Gimmler, Hurly turned in three rounds in the 60s to finish at five under par 205 (69-68-68). Hurly totaled 11 birdies over his 54 holes, including five in Saturday afternoon's second round.
 
Reigning Patriot League Golfer of the Week, senior Edmund Broderick, was Lehigh's No. 2 finisher as he tied for 13th place at two under par 208 (69-70-69). Broderick was consistent, with 44 pars over his 18 holes. He also made six birdies, two in each round.
 
Junior Jahan Bains enjoyed the strongest weekend of his Lehigh career, turning in a one under par 209 (70-69-70), with all three rounds marking his lowest scores as Mountain Hawk. Bains made seven birdies and recorded an eagle on the par-5 16th hole Saturday afternoon.
 
First-year Matthew Quinn debuted with a 219, tying him for 62nd place. Quinn had a strong Saturday with rounds of 70 and 71 before shooting 78 in the final round. He made five birdies over his 54 holes.
 
Sophomore Will Caronchi was Lehigh's fifth scoring player. He tied for 76th place at 225 (72-77-76). Caronchi made two birdies in each of his final two rounds after an opening round that featured two bogeys and 16 pars.
 
Newcomer Paulius Malcius competed as an individual and turned in a strong weekend. The sophomore tied for 36th place at three over par 213 (68-71-74). Malcius' opening round 68 matched Hurly for the lowest Lehigh round of the weekend. He finished with seven birdies including three in each round on Saturday.
 
Columbia captured the team title at 29 under par 811. The Lions defeated runner-up Georgetown by 13 strokes. Nathan Han of Columbia was the individual medalist at 14 under par 196 (64-64-68). Han defeated teammate DJ Francey by five strokes.
 
The Mountain Hawks will be in action for the third consecutive weekend, next weekend, when they play in the Temple Invitational, Sept. 16-17 in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.
