GLADSTONE, N.J.- A fast start in the day-opening better ball competition helped lift Lehigh to an 11.5-8.5 win over Lafayette in the annual Presidents Cup matches Thursday at Hamilton Farm Golf Club. The Mountain Hawks led 6-4 after doubles play and secured 5.5 points in singles action to retain the cup for a sixth consecutive year.
Â
Lehigh was led by juniors Matthew Quinn and Charles Schrohe, who teamed for doubles wins in both the better ball and alternate shot formats and then went on to win their singles matches.
Â
Thursday's action began with better ball doubles play, with Lehigh claiming the first four matches to lead 4-1. Lehigh's teams included sophomore Luke Block and senior Paulius Malcius, first-years Ryan Cronin and Drew Golden, senior Aiden LeBlanc and sophomore Noah Zyung, and the team of Quinn and Schrohe.
Â
In alternate shot play, Lafayette won three of the five matches. Lehigh picked up wins from Cronin and Golden, 2 up over Viktor and Valdemar Kofod-Olsen, and Quinn and Schrohe 2 and 1 over Travis Robertson and Michael DiNapoli.
Â
Needing four more points to retain the cup, Lehigh went 5-4-1 in singles action to secure the trophy for another year. The first five singles matches were split 2-2-1. Malcius beat Hudson Pace 1 up in the second match and Zyung won match five over Chris Vahey 2 and 1. Cronin and Reed Theiss halved their match for the only tie of the day.
Â
Schrohe and Quinn helped Lehigh past the 10-point threshold in matches seven and eight, respectively. Schrohe won 1 up over DiNapoli and Quinn defeated Winston Kelenc-Blank 3 and 2 to put the Mountain Hawks at 10.5 points with two matches remaining.
Â
Senior Jake Roth won the final match 2 and 1 over Harry Dessel to account for the final margin.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will now shift focus to the Patriot League Championship, April 24-26 at Army's West Point Golf Course.
