Mountain Hawks Earn Two Wins on Saturday Day-Night Doubleheader

SALISBURY, Md. – The Lehigh baseball team (5-3) played two games on Saturday that saw the Mountain Hawks take down Manhattan College (2-7) 18-6 in its first game of the day and then defeated the host Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore (0-10) 12-2 at the Parker Athletic Complex.
 
Game 1 – vs. Manhattan 
Lehigh scored seven runs over the first three innings to possess a 7-0 lead over the Jaspers. Sophomore Rafe Perich gave the Brown and White the lead with a two-run homer in the first and followed it up with an RBI single in the bottom of the second. Fifth-year Casey Rother doubled to right-center field to score two runs before fifth-year Joe Gorla reached base on an error which scored one run to give the Mountain Hawks a 6-0 advantage. Junior Tyler Young scored the lone run of the third frame when he raced home on a passed ball to give Lehigh a 7-0 lead.
 
Manhattan got its first runs across the plate in the top half of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to just four runs, 7-3, but the Mountain Hawks countered with three runs in the fifth with a Young RBI single and Perich two-RBI double to extend their lead to 10-3. Sophomore Andrew Kohl, this week's Patriot League Player of the Week, crushed his team-leading fourth home run of the season for two more runs in the sixth frame to stretch Lehigh's advantage to 12-3.
 
The Jaspers scored their final runs of the game in the seventh on a three-run home run by Trevor Hansen to cut Lehigh's lead in half, 12-6, but two more runs by the Mountain Hawks increased their lead to 14-6. Junior Drew Morse singled to left field for an RBI and then Rother launched a three-run home run for his 20th career homer wearing the Brown and White. Lehigh would close out the top of the ninth inning to secure an 18-6 victory over Manhattan.

Ten Mountain Hawks collected 17 hits, with Perich and Kohl producing three-hit performances. Perich finished a triple shy of earning a cycle, with a homer, double and single with five RBIs and scored two runs himself while Kohl went 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk, a stolen base, two RBIs and scored twice. Rother recorded two hits which plated five runners with a three-run homer and a double with three runs scored while fifth-year Gerard Sweeney and Young also produced two hits. Sweeney added one RBI while Young scored three runs and drove in one.
 
Junior Tyler Young and Cochran each had one base hit, with Young earning a walk, one double and a run scored while Cochran raced around the bases for his first-career triple and scored a run for Lehigh as Whitlinger recorded a pair of RBIs while drawing three walks and scored three times. Morse earned the first hit of this season which brought in a run and first-year Trystan Crawford earned his first collegiate hit and scored a run

Sophomore right-hander Alex Bouchard got the start in game one of the day and tossed 1.2 innings on one hit and no runs allowed with two strikeouts and four walks. He was replaced by sophomore Jack Hamilton who also threw 1.2 innings and gave up three earned runs on two hits and a walk. First-year Shane O'Neill (1-0) stepped on the mound and hurled 2.2 innings and held the Jaspers scoreless and allowed just one hit with four strikeouts to earn his first career win. Sophomore Marcus Danchision threw three innings of work and allowed three earned runs on three hits and struck out one in the game.

Game 2 – vs. Maryland Eastern Shore 
Lehigh tallied three runs in the top of the first frame after Whitlinger crossed the plate after an error on the shortstop and followed up by a two-run homer by Sweeney to give the Mountain Hawks a 3-0 lead. Maryland Eastern Shore scored a run on a wild pitch that moved another Hawk to third base and scored on another wild pitch to put The Shore within a run, 3-2 after one inning.
 
The Mountain Hawks then opened things up in the top of the second when Rother connected on a swing and crushed a grand slam for his fourth home run of the season and second one of the day as Lehigh extended its lead to 7-2 after two innings of play. Kohl added one more run with a solo homer in the third frame to make it an 8-2 game, his second of the day and team-leading fifth of the year. Kohl then scored the lone run of the fifth inning to push Lehigh in front 9-2 then three more runs crossed the plate in the top half of the sixth with sophomore Sam Holtz recording a two-RBI double to left-center field and Young singling to right for an RBI to put the Mountain Hawks ahead 12-2 after six innings. The leading margin would remain at 10 runs for the final three innings as Lehigh earned the 12-2 win.
 
Whitlinger went 3-for-4 in this game with a double, a walk and two runs scored while Kohl and Young both went 2-for-4 at the plate. Kohl had his fifth homer of the season with an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases while recorded two RBIs and drawing one walk.
 
Five other Mountain Hawks reached base with a hit, including Rother with his grand slam home run for four RBIs and scored two runs and drew one walk. Perich scored three runs and brought in a runner while Sweeney and Holtz each contributed two RBIs. Sophomore Andrew Nole had a base knock and one walk while Brandon Coughlin earned his first collegiate hit in his first at-bat.
 
The left-handed fifth-year Luke Rettig (2-0) got the start in game two of the day and tossed five innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits with two walks and reached double-digits in strikeouts with 10 Ks. Senior Will Grisack (S, 1) was the lone reliever and threw four innings of work and did not allow a run on four hits and four strikeouts to earn his first save of the season and the third of his career.

Lehigh remains in Maryland to take on the Jaspers and Hawks for another game in a Sunday doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Parker Athletic Complex against Manhattan then will wrap up the weekend with a game against Maryland Eastern Shore, set for 2 pm. At the Park Athletic Complex in Salisbury, Md.
