Lehigh Splits Sunday Doubleheader

SALISBURY, Md. – The Lehigh baseball squad (6-4) played two games on Sunday that saw the Mountain Hawks take down Manhattan College (3-8) 5-4 in its first game of the day and then suffering a loss to the host Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore (1-11) 8-7 at the Parker Athletic Complex.

Game 1 – vs. ManhattanÂ
Lehigh scored three runs in the third inning with an RBI single from sophomore Jake Whitlinger followed by a double by sophomore Rafe Perich that plated a couple of Mountain Hawks to lead Manhattan 3-0 after three innings. The Jaspers and Lehigh played three scoreless innings until fifth-year Casey Rother singled to right field to extend its advantage to 4-0 after the top half of the seventh inning.

Manhattan cut the lead in half with one run scored in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings, 4-2, but Lehigh added an insurance run in the ninth inning off the bat of Rother with an RBI double that scored Perich for a 5-2 lead. The Jaspers scored twice in their half of the ninth frame but the Mountain Hawks were able to hold on for a 5-4 victory.

Three Mountain Hawks produced two hits in the win, with Rother going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored while Perich also was credited with two RBIs, a double and scored a run. Whitlinger went 2-for-3 with a couple of walks, two stolen bases, one RBI and scored twice. Juniors Tyler Young and Andrew Nole recorded one hit each, with Young adding two walks in the game and Nole scoring a run while junior Riley Davis drew two walks and scored a run.

Junior right-hand pitcher Teddy Tolliver got the start and tossed three innings of work with just one hit, three strikeouts and a couple of walks before he was replaced by senior right-hander Ryan Deom, who threw three scoreless innings without allowing a hit and had one strikeout. First-year Cole Leaman threw 1.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits and struck out two Jaspers. Rother toed the rubber for 0.1 and walked three batters for two earned run before Perich entered the game and hurled a hitless inning with one strikeout and two walks to earn his second save of the season. Deom recorded the win, his first of the year.
Game 2 – vs. Maryland Eastern ShoreÂ
Maryland Eastern Shore got on the board in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead, but first-year Owen Walewander connected for his first-career home run to left field to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead. The Hawks countered with a run in the bottom half of the third to tie the game at 2-2 but Kohl homered to left-center field to put the Mountain Hawks back on top, 4-2.

The Shore scored six fourth-inning runs to regain the lead for the Hawks and stretch the advantage over Lehigh, 8-4, after four innings. The Mountain Hawks scored a run in the fifth and two runs in the eighth inning to come within a run, 8-7, but Maryland Eastern Shore would hold on for their first win of the season.

Kohl went 3-for-4 in this game with a home run, a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored while first-year Ryan Cochran contributed two hits with a double, a walk, one RBI and a run scored.
Three other Mountain Hawks reached base with a hit, including Walewander hitting his first collegiate homer to go with three RBIs. Whitlinger, Holtz and Young also recorded a base knock with Young also drawing a walk and plated one runner.

The right-handed senior Ben Christian started game two of the day and tossed three innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits. Sophomore Najir Glenn (0-1) walked one batter and gave up a hit to another for two earned runs before sophomore Val Taddei replaced Glenn, faced three Hawks, and gave up two earned runs on two hits and a walk. Junior Tyler Thompson threw five innings and struck out two batters while allowing just two hits and no runs. Glenn would be dealt the loss in the decision.
Lehigh is scheduled to play its first home game on Wednesday, March 8 at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park against Coppin State. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
