Mountain Hawks Host Coppin State in Home Opener Before Taking Trip to Utah Valley

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team is scheduled to five games this week, including its home opener at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park as the Mountain Hawks host Coppin State before taking a trip west to take on Utah Valley for four games Friday through Sunday.

The Mountain Hawks (6-4) are coming off a 3-1 weekend where they defeated Manhattan (3-8) twice, (18-6 and 5-4) and split two games with host Maryland Eastern Shore (1-11), winning 12-2 in the first game and falling 8-7 in game two. Sophomore outfielder Andrew Kohl, a Patriot League honorable mention, went 8-for-15 this past weekend, hitting .533 with three home runs, five RBIs, six runs scored and two walks. Fifth-year Casey Rother recorded 10 RBIs on four hits, two home runs and a double with six runs scored while sophomore Rafe Perich produced nine RBIs on six hits, six runs scored, two doubles and a home run.
Sophomore Jake Whitlinger and first-year Ryan Cochran each had a batting average of .400 for the weekend, with Whitlinger collecting six hits with a double, one RBI, scoring seven runs and was walked four times. Cochran had two hits, one double and scored two runs.

Kohl leads the squad with a batting average of .462 and six home runs while Cochran, Perich and junior Tyler Young are all hitting over .300 this season. Perich leads Lehigh with 14 RBIs while Kohl and Rother have plated 13 runs each.
Fifteen different Mountain Hawks made appearances on the mound this past weekend, with the left-handed fifth-year Luke Rettig, a Patriot League honorable mention selection, starting in the first game against Maryland Eastern Shore and throwing 5.0 innings striking out 10 batters while earning his second win of the season. He faced 19 Hawks and only allowed two hits, two earned runs and two walks while earning three flyouts and two groundouts for a 1.80 ERA.

First-year right-hander Shane O'Neill earned his first collegiate win this past weekend in Lehigh's 18-6 victory over Manhattan. He threw 2.2 innings in relief with four strikeouts and allowed just one hit to go with two flyouts and one groundout. Senior right-hander Ryan Deom earned a win over the weekend, tossing three scoreless innings without allowing a hit and striking out one batter. Junior right-hander Tyler Thompson threw five scoreless innings with two hits and a strikeout while senior right-hander Will Grisack tossed four innings, did not allow a run on four hits, and recorded four strikeouts.
Coppin State (3-8) won its first three games of the season against Saint Peter's (12-4, 14-7 and 16-8) but are on an eight-game losing streak since the opening series. They have dropped games to Mount St. Mary's , No. 19 Oregon State, Navy and most recently VMI. Jordan Hamberg leads the Eagles at the plate, hitting .400 with 16 hits, four doubles, three triples, three home runs and 18 RBIs. Corey Miley, Brody Black and Josh Hankins are all hitting at least .300 so far this season, with Black and Hankins with 12 and 11 hits respectively. Â On the mound for Coppin State, three pitchers have started three games apiece. Liam McCallum and Hamberg have both recorded 10 strikeouts each while McCallum and Herrand have won one game each.

Utah Valley (8-5) will be entering the weekend four-game series off a 4-3 victory over Northwest Nazarene on Monday evening. The Wolverines have split a four-game series with UC Davis and the University of Portland and have claimed a series win against UC Riverside. Six members of UVU already have over 35 at-bats with Garrett Broussard and Patrick Mills hitting over .300. Broussard is hitting .325 with 13 hits, three doubles and two home runs to go with a team-leading 11 RBIs while Mills also has a .325 batting average with two doubles, nine RBIs and leads the squad with three homers.

Five Wolverine pitchers have thrown 10 or more innings so far this season, with Ethan Fowlks tossing 13 innings with two saves, 12 strikeouts and only two earned runs in three appearances. Logan Gerling is 3-0 in his three starts and has three earned runs and 14 strikeouts in 14 innings of work.
