LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lehigh men's and women's swimming and diving teams kicked off a strong first day of the Patriot League Championships Wednesday night in Lewisburg, Pa, at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium. The Mountain Hawks had a fast start in the relays to start day one.Â
The 800-yard men's freestyle relay set a school record. Elvin Lee led the way, Tim Norris, Connor Goodyear and Alex Patti anchored the school-record . They finished in fifth with a time of 6:37.21.Â
"The tone has been set and this group is fearless," said head coach Rob Herb. "We are beyond excited for tomorrow."Â
Lehigh didn't have anyone competing in the men's three-meter dive, which was the first event of the day, so the Mountain Hawks night started with the 200-yard medley relay, where the Mountain Hawks took a sixth-place finish. Elvin Lee, Aiden McCurley, Aaron Williams and Jack Devilbiss finished in 1:29.28.Â
The next event was the 800-yard freestyle relay. The women's side had a very strong performance, finishing in fourth place. Willa Werwaiss led the way, and Mairin Ludwig, Sarah Hardy and Sarah Manthorp anchored Werwaiss. They finished in 7:19.78 and were just one second shy of a third-place finish. The 200-yard medley on the women's side was disqualified for an early start.Â
The men sit in fifth place after day one with 54 points, and the women are in ninth with 30.Â
Thursday's swimming events will be the 500 freestyle, the 200 IM, the 50-yard freestyle and the 400-yard medley relay. The women's 1-meter dive will also kick off tomorrow. The diving trials start at 1 p.m.Â
The preliminary swim sessions start at 10 a.m., and the finals will run at 6 p.m.
