BETHLEHEM, Pa. — With two players inside the top 20 for the weekend, the Lehigh men's golf team finished in 10th position at the conclusion of the Lehigh Invitational at Saucon Valley Country Club Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Sam Barton was the low finisher for Lehigh and birdied three holes in the second round, finishing in a tie for 20th place with a score of 153 (78-75). Senior and defending champion Owen Quinn birdied twice on the front nine and made par the entire stretch of the back nine to finish in a tie for 26th place (78-77).
"Sam's got a lot of talent, his golf swing repeats, he's got a great ball flight, he hits the ball a long way," said head coach Henry D'Alberto. "He's learning and wants to continue to learn, so I think if he keeps doing the things I've been working with him on and some of his teammates, I think he's going to get better and better."
Freshman David Hurly tied for 33rd position at 156 (79-77). He made birdie on three holes in the back nine. Senior Ryan Kelly birdied 18 and finished in a tie for 42nd at 158 (77-81).
Freshman Alex Aurora finished in a tie for 68th at 165 (80-85). In addition, playing as an individual was freshman Joey Dotta who finished in a tie for 56th place with a final score of 161 (80-81).
"This is probably the most difficult golf course we play all year," said D'Alberto. "We just didn't have it this week, we struggled really from the beginning to the end. Our seniors struggled, our freshmen struggled, but I think we know what we need to do in the offseason so hopefully we can move forward from this."
Holy Cross claimed the team title with a final round score of 592 (301-291). Army West Point's Justin Williamson won the individual title at 144 (74-70). He was the only golfer to finish even par for the tournament.
The event concludes the Mountain Hawks' fall schedule and will pick back up in the spring on the road to the Patriot League Championships.
