Mountain Hawks drop 30-10 decision at Penn

9/22/2018 7:59:00 PM | Football

PHILADELPHIA – Last year Lehigh and Penn tilted the Goodman Stadium scoreboard, combining for 112 points and over 1,100 yards of offense.

Both defenses played significantly better this time around.

Penn led 13-10 at the half and scored the only 17 points of the second half to claim a 30-10 victory over the Mountain Hawks Saturday at Franklin Field.

Lehigh held its own defensively until the Quakers put the game out of reach with a late Karekin Brooks touchdown run, but the Mountain Hawks struggled to get in synch offensively as they suffer their third straight defeat, falling to 1-3 on the season.

The Quakers (2-0) held the Mountain Hawks to 298 yards of total offense and sacked senior quarterback Brad Mayes seven times. Lehigh was also hurt by six penalties, many of which were procedural and negated offensive momentum.

"It seemed like everything fell their way because they played better than we did," Lehigh head coach Andy Coen said. "We started out pretty well. We tried to get our offense going by running the ball. We moved the ball pretty well in that regard. What kept happening was we'd get a six yard gain and then get a procedural penalty that knocks us back down.

"You can't win when those things happen."

Mayes finished 17-of-35 for 218 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Senior Luke Christiano had a team-high six receptions for 83 yards and the Lehigh touchdown on a 23-yard catch late in the first half. Junior Devon Bibbens had his first career 100-yard receiving game with 100 yards on five catches.

Lehigh was held to 80 yards rushing, with senior Dominick Bragalone returning to the lineup with 103 yards on 23 carries.

The Mountain Hawks held Penn to 54 yards on 13 plays in the first quarter and put together an 11-play, 79-yard drive late in the quarter. Senior Ed Mish kicked a 23-yard field goal to give Lehigh a 3-0 lead four seconds into the second period.

Two long passes set up two second quarter touchdowns as the Quakers scored the next 13 points to take the lead. Ryan Glover hit Steve Farrell deep for 43 yards setting up a Brooks eight-yard touchdown run. A missed extra point put Penn up 6-3 with just under eight minutes remaining in the quarter. On Penn's next possession, Glover hit Logan Sharp on a 42-yard catch-and-run, setting up a one-yard run from Brooks two plays later.

Lehigh answered with its lone touchdown drive of the game, as Mayes hit Christiano for 24 yards to convert a 3rd-and-9 and then hit Christiano on the next play down the left sideline for a 23-yard touchdown.

Penn added to its lead midway through the third quarter as Glover capped a 73-yard drive with a 17-yard touchdown run to put the Quakers up 20-10.

Lehigh's defense made an early stop in the fourth quarter and Mayes converted a 3rd-and-7 by hitting sophomore Jorge Portorreal on a crossing route to move the ball into Penn territory. Two plays later, Mayes appeared to complete a deep pass to senior Sasha Kelsey, but the completion was overturned on replay. Jacob Martin intercepted Mayes on the next play, which led to a Penn field goal.

Brooks carried 16 times for 163 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Quakers, while Glover completed 16-of-31 for 206 yards and rushed 12 times for 77 yards.

Seniors Mark Walker and Sam McCloskey led Lehigh's defense with 10 tackles apiece. The Mountain Hawks did not record a sack, a tackle for loss or a takeaway in the game, the first time this season Lehigh's defense has not come up with a turnover or a tackle for loss.

"The kids always give great effort," Coen said. "We're just not hitting on all cylinders and we haven't been from the first game on. The passing attack hasn't been what it has been in years past. We've got to find a way to fix it."

The Mountain Hawks will have their bye next weekend and will return to action on Saturday Oct. 6 when they travel to Princeton. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from Princeton Stadium in New Jersey with video coverage on ESPN+ and audio coverage on Fox Sports Radio 1230 and 1320.

EXTRA POINTS… Penn has now won two straight in the series after Lehigh had won 13 of 17 since 1976… Lehigh is now 5-7 in games prior to its bye week under Andy Coen… sophomore Jackson Evans made his first start of the season at center after missing three games due to injury… senior Thomas Zuewsky made his first career start at right guard… junior Jon Seighman made eight tackles in place of injured linebacker Keith Woetzel… Mish had another good day punting, averaging 44 yards on eight kicks… sophomore Jaylen Floyd gained 56 yards on six punt returns, including a 32-yard return… Bragalone's 100-yard rushing game was the 19th of his career.
